Don't know if this question has been posed before but I would like some input from those in the know. I have a NH TC40d and it weighs in at about 4500# if I remember right. When I have the backhoe attached it adds another 1500# and changes the load center of the tractor rearward. I'm aware of keeping positive tongue weight applied. My question is with the backhoe tie downs. They are above the rear axle. Are the tie downs improper above the axle? Also is it best to put the hoe bucket on the deck for transport? My trailer has two 5200# axles so I'm well within the trailers capacity.

It's best if you can attach the "main" tiedown straps/chains to the "frame" of the tractor meaning front weight bracket, drawbar, axles or wheels. Although, running chains through openings in the rims is not a good idea (will scratch them) sometimes you don't have too many options. As for an attachment, if you can get it to rest flat on the trailer bed, or a sturdy railing, chain it down to that as well. The more the better!

Thanks kebo. I've passed other equipment trailers on the road during normal commutes and have been surprised by some of the minimal tie downs I have seen on some very expensive equipment. I'll take some more care to ensure my equipment is secured better in the future.
