Hi all, I'm new here.
I was wondering if anyone out there had any tried and tested methods of securing a 580c backhoe from thieft?
Also, where is a good inexpensive source for manuals?
thank you for your help

Nutcase,
Interesting question. I'm currently in the process of finalizing a deal on a Case 580C myself. A friend of mine who turn me onto this hoe runs a heavy equipment business and told me that the number one stolen vehicle in the world is a Case 580 backhoe. The second most stolen vehicle is a Dodge diesel pickup.

Not sure where he got his statisics but I guess I've really never thought about that stuff before.

I'll be watching the replys to this post for sure!

Too bad we couldn't interview a 580 thief for pointers. They would have good pointers on what to do.
Any tried and tested ideas are welcomed.

Well, case backhoes DID have cover panels on their dash or steering column when they were new. You don't find that anymore since they've gone through so many owners or the owner took them off and chucked them. My boss's 580B, the late model (similar to the C) had the same thing, you would have the steel go over the dash and lock it up so that no one could damage or do whatever to the dash and the key area. That's also another reason for wanting side panels on your engine, because if there aren't any, anyone can easily jump start it by simply reaching into the engine and starting it. My boss does that all the time, since he's too lazy to get the key early in the morning. I can't remember how he starts it but I know it's SUPER easy and he uses, a metal rod or something. Other than that, I really don't know how to prevent theft. My boss just brings his machine home, every once in a while, if it's in someone's yard, he'll leave it since the homeowner will be kind enough to keep an eye out.

This is where I picked up my manuals. Probably find them cheaper but I recieved mine in 3 days.

I've noticed quite a few machines with a mechanical lock/padlock assembly placed on a rear stabilizer in the down position. Unfortunately, I don't know where to get one.

Nutcase, why do you ask about securing your machine. Do you leave it on open job sights?

Coopers, no I don't leave it open, but I don't trust to leave it "unguarded". There are some less than desirable individuals who frequent my neck of the woods.
I know that where there is a will, there is a way. But the more deterrents that I can put in place the more comfortable I feel walking away.
I now lock the cab, gas, radiator,
That down rigger lock sounds interesting, I might see about welding something out of the way yet durable.
If I could lock out the ability to move it, then at least it will stay put and not be driven down a cliff, into the lake, or what have you.
A guy I knew had snowmobilers, riding through the woods come upon his place and siphon all the gas out of his vehicles. Yes, I know this is diesel. OK I just don't want to take any chances
thieves and trouble makers don't like, taking their time, making noise, and being scene. I'm in the woods, tuff spot.\
I'll try the source for manuals. mikell, thanks.

I see, I wasn't too sure on your situation. So you have a closed cabed machine and not open. It's too bad you feel that way on your own property!

I know this will not keep it in the yard, but might help get it back. My suggestion is to set up a wild life motion sensor camera, overlooking the area. Pictures need to be good enough to use though.
