Case 580c backhoe brake fluid

My brother has a Case 580c backhoe with no brakes. The master cylinder is empty of fluids. There is some dispute if DOT 3 or hydraulic fluid is needed on certain years. Nothing in his manuals and nothing on the master cylinder caps. The serial number on a tag on the engine is 2848980 in small letters, above it in larger print is the number 2870 if this helps in his request. The PTO reservoir is empty also, just PTO fluid? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Should be DOT 3. Hyd oil was D model up.

Pto reservoir??? You mean hyd tank?

Being that the PTO system is a hydraulic pump and motor, a premium hydraulic/transmission oil is the recommendation. Don't expect much from that PTO system though.

And dot 3 is the brake fluid in that system

Could be several reasons the master cylinders are empty. #1, they are shot and need replaced, reason #2 there is a rubber flex line near the brake chamber that has blown out, reason #3 metal lines from master cylinder to near brake chamber are rusted out.

All 3 happened on my 480C. I got new master cylinders through Joseph Industries Reman Driveline Components They were the least expensive at the time approx. 10 years ago. The rubber lines are actually cheaper through Case/IH Ag. I actually lucked out finding one on ebay, the other I had to bite the bullet through Case/IH. As for the brake lines, I bought a flaring tool through Eastwood and bought NiCopp line through an auto parts store. Not cheap but flaring tool and line was less than one line from Case Construction. Eastwood Professional Brake Line and Tubing Flaring Tool Price has gone up on flaring tool, but I've made more than several lines for a couple of my trucks too, so well worth it to me.
