You are going to need a big sand box! Ha ha ha

Very nice.

Have you decided what kind of lettering you're going to use.

Perhaps a name.

CAT 11
Cat 0.22
Halfcat
Microcat
Minipillar
MOUSE
ANT

you might need to add a tilt swich.
at least a ROPS.

At some point in the future, I bet your son will learn that his "toy" is really good at stripping sod...yours, the neighbors, their neighbors. :)

That pretty subdivision we saw in that YouTube...is gonna get trashed, and you know you will have to say with more than a bit of pride That's my boy! before you tan his bottom :)

Great job!!

Great Idea....

Just what you need for the Dozer... a RIPPER on the rear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So a little update. I haven't given up on it but I have taken a break from building. Spent some time showing it off to family and riding it around a bit because it's so much fun.

Here is another video.
Homemade Mini Caterpillar Dozer Second Run - YouTube

Now I've been working on the blade design. There were a fair amount of pieces that I didn't model in CAD and I just kind of built it as I went (hose routing, control handles etc). It worked out but I wasn't exactly happy with a few things even though I'm going to live with it. I'm running out of room fast, so I'm going to model every last piece before I resume building. I found parker fitting stp files online and I learned and easy way to draw hoses so it hasn't been too bad. Been a good learning experience actually.

As for the blade, I've decided to do hydraulic up and down with a da valve and hydraulic swivel with a electro-hydraulic valve (because of space). It will be a 42" wide blade (the dozer is 35" wide), will raise 9.5" off the ground and swivel a total of 50 degrees. I'll make some type of skid and/or plastic edge when plowing snow. It will not be spring loaded. I know that when the blade is raised it won't be flat but I just don't have the room or need for a 6 way blade. In all honesty this won't do much more work than just plowing snow. I have a small yard. I don't really know what I'm doing so it's the best I could think of considering the type of work it will actually be doing.

Here are a few pictures of where I'm at in the model.

I gotta say, it's been tough making everything fit. But it's a lot easier to change in the model than it is in real life. If I spend the time in the model now, the actual build should go real easy.

Thanks for looking.

Very cool, I was thinking adjustable stops for the speed. Kids learn quickly and won't like slow for long. That thing looks like it would crawl up a tree which makes me think you need a roll cage and seat belt like the big ones. In black maybe. :)

As you'll see in the video I just posted, it goes a little too fast. I was shooting for power wheel speeds (2.5mph and 5mph, engine a little above idle and full throttle). With the pump specs and the underdriven pulleys, I calculated about 6.5 mph. So I'm either going to change the engine pulley or limit the throttle handles in some way. Starting out, it'd like it to go about 1mph for him.

That is pretty quick. Looks like it's pretty smooth.

Are you modelling a Cat 22?

Many of them probably had winch operated blades. But, it never hurts to modernize a few things.

Do you have goals for what your kid may end up pushing around? He might get into less trouble with one-way hydraulics, and only hydraulic up on the blade. Perhaps even putting wheels under the ends of the blade so it will do less damage scraping across the lawn.

Great video clip!!! Really impressive seeing it working. Was it comfortable to sit on and operate?

That thing boogies for a dozer. Way cool. Im interested to understand the hydro swivle for the blade? Do you have pics? Ive been wanting to build one of these for quite a while. Ive collected some parts but what really thru me was the swivle for the blade.
Thanks Paul

I'm going to change the engine pulley. Goes a little too fast. And it's really bumpy on concrete which I expected but real smooth on the grass.

The Cat 22 is the inspiration but it isn't an exact replica. As for the goals, I have no idea. It's been all over the place. I'll explain a little more below.

Thank you. It isn't too comfortable for me right now but I plan to put some foot pegs up near the engine. That will let my legs stretch out a bit. However, this is for my son mostly so he will fit into it well.

Sorry it's been so long since the last update. Still working on the plow design. Still struggling to make things fit but it's getting better. The hoses have been the hardest part actually.

I'm still not done but here is where I'm at as well as a few stats.

48" wide blade (dozer is 35" wide).
50 degrees of total swivel.
8.5" of blade lift.
Spring loaded for plowing snow in the winter but will lock for the summer.
Hydraulic lift and swivel.

There have been multiple changes but I think this is what I'm going to stick with. I've struggled to figure out what this thing is supposed to be. It started off in my head as a much smaller, lighter, possibly battery powered dozer. Just a toy. It's gone way overboard. Obviously. But it still isn't because I need it. I still don't own any property and if I really did need to do actual work, my brother has more powerful equipment. The only useful work this thing will actually do is plow snow. Other than that, it will be for fun letting my son push around loose piles of dirt at my brothers house and taking it to shows. I've had a lot of fun designing it and building it. If I made it easy, it just wouldn't be any fun.

So here it is.

I have and will continue to see things that I don't like anymore or want to change but there is going to come a point real soon where I'm going to have to live with the design and move forward. I hope to wrap up the design by end of next month.

Thanks for looking.

Well, the good news is, I'm building again. And I bought a new engine. 18.5 hp Briggs with a fuel pump and 9 amp alternator. Need to get files sent out to get parts burned out. The shopping list for fittings, cylinders, hoses, pumps and valves is almost done.

Man this project is awesome. I hope I can make time in life busy schedule to make projects like this for my kids. Great job. Can't wait to see it finished.

It's tough some times. I just don't sleep very much. Having a plan drawn up in CAD has helped more than anything else.

In an effort to save some time, I made a visit to the waterjet table.

I finished drilled all the holes though.

Then I started putting some things together.

Been turning a lot of pieces on the lathe as well. I've been making some decent progress just haven't been taking a lot of pictures. After I got it running, I feel that going back to posting pictures of pieces of steel is a little boring.

My brother in law is working on rolling my plow and cutting out a few more pieces. I also need to get moving on my hydraulic parts order.

Also, now that the end is getting somewhat near, I need to start thinking about paint. The real dozers have metal tracks and the whole thing is painted yellow. Being that I have black rubber tracks I wasn't sure how it's going to look.

I've done a couple of different colors schemes. I'm between #2 and #3.

I did a grey one like the Model Twenty I saw at the Caterpillar visitor center. (And a darker grey just for the **** of it). Just to see what it would look like.

Have you considered a military green or dessert camo look? Kids love all things military.
