Sawmill

Mornin Gunnar,
This is my buddies sawmill, I helped him get it up and running. I had to make a few parts to make it operational. We finally used a bigger tractor and a friction drive with a pillow block and tire for more HP.

Yep, i'm in. I bought a Hudson chainsaw mill and am picking it up next month. I plan on cutting my own Eastern red cedar to build my house/barn. It will be a 2 year project, starting this winter!

the best place I have found and one of the only really good free ones is here http:/www.forestryforum.com I'm a member for a while now while I don't have a mill I do have timber, and have been deciding on getting and looking for a good mill. not many around even on e-bay, NEW ones yes but they range from the really low production 4K range to the high production Woodmizers & pertersons/ lucas mills, (swing mills really are appealing to me but not a heck of a lot of BIG trees around these part now but you sure could corner the market if ya had one locally!

Gunnar,

I got my March issue of Northeast Farming magazine and they had a pullout section on the LOGOSOL sawmill. I had never seen one before and when I saw this post I thought what a concidence! Is your mill electric or do you use the chainsaw for power? Do you have to push the saw through the log or is there a mechanical winch to pull it?

I also looked at some of your other posts and came across your son's website. You must be very pleased with him. He has had quite an adventurous education. His photos are fantastic.

I have enjoyed your contributions to this site and like others am envious of all of your "toys".

Spiker,

I have been on the Forestryforum, but for some strange reason they will not let me register because i have a free e-mail address(hotmail). Apparently they must have had trouble in the past with trolls. It 's too bad, because it is a very informative forum, and i am sure there are lots of us with free em's that are missing out.

Maybe the moderators here will consider a woodworking/forestry forum here. The one on Countrybynet just doesn't seem to get many hits.

Maybe they've changed the rules since I joined, but I used Yahoo free email to register at forestryforum with no problem.

My mill is powered with an old Scania Vabis bus motor, it is fed wit a hydraulic motor and a wire. The oil that feeds the movement is the same that goes through the "push roller", syncronicing them that way. I bought the mill, just made the power equipment myself

Ok guys,

I went over there and they have a forum that guests can type in on. Their moderator sent me an em and is seting me up with registration. The forestryforum.com seems to be really well done and busy, so i plan on asking a few questions there in the future.

MotorSeven have you really looked into the diff between a chain mill and a band ?I went chain at first then bit the checkbook and now have a band

J,

One reason is the $, the other is that i am more comfortable around a chainsaw, and i can de-tach it to cut down the "big one". The E.R.C. that i am going to be turning into 6" D shaped logs seems to be a pretty soft wood. I plan on ringing the trees and letting them stand dead for 4-6 months before skidding them down to the mill. I know this mill is slower, but i will be retired and time really isn't a huge issue.
I do reserve the right to slap myself in the noggin for not going with a band from the get go /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif! I did get a good deal (half price) on a slightly used mill on Ebay, so if i have to trade up it shouldn't sting too bad.
Feel free to give any advise/opinions..........this my first attempt at "milling", so i have alot to learn.

Don't dry your logs. Infact mills keep them wet with sprayers. I built a band saw from an 8 hp brigs and some junk yard scrap. It was gravity feed. The log was stationary, cutter rolled on angle iron.

Worked like a charm and built a 2400 sqft timberframe house.
