There is something similar to tractor seat time in making lumber out of logs.

I very much enjoy the cutting of logs a then the planing of the boards. It's like you said---addictive.

Really like watching and smelling the planer shavings.

That's a pretty bold project you have taken on. Way beyond my basic limits! It appeared, that your saw bar may be longer than you actually need. ?? ... of course, it's more teeth.

Certainly an interesting way to apply a wood roof. I wouldn't use a conifer (looked like pine to me), but if it's what you have, it's what you use.

Great video. I do a lot of "green" woodworking. A few books by mike abbot, about chair building use this process. Its also how Peter Follensbee makes his red oak boxes.
Having trees split nice and straight like that is a joy. I had a nice black cherry that I was making bowls and spoons from do that, but I have had others that are really wavy.
It was interesting seeing how sharp he keeps his froe, mine is sharp but not that sharp I may hit it with a diamond stone I have.
The wooden wedges are great, I use them in splitting crooks for spoons, and we had to have them when I took a bowl hewing/carving class with Beth Moen.

Thanks! The long term plan is to place the mill permanently add a log deck and unload logs from the trailer directly on the deck. That way I dont have to lift it twice.

Yessir I used half of it recently for my porch ceiling. It is only local white pine but the wood density, smell and quality compared to Home Depot lumber is just amazing.

I love white pine for framing lumber. Late 90's, Southern Pine Beetle decimated the pine in our area, and I had to cut pines off our place that ran up to 30" in diameter....never would have cut them, but since they were all dying, might as well make lemons into lemonade. I had stacks and stacks of pine cut around the mill, ended up building 3 rental homes out of it all.

I have a bunch of 70 year old White Pine and just bought a used sawmill, never used one before in my life but I never liked pine because the bugs get into it and make a sure mess at least here in Vermont. This guy says White Pine is the best for framing. How does one keep the grubs from chewing up my new timber frame woodshed?
