If I ever put in a better heating system it would probably be some sort of heat pump. My main heat source right now is "free" firewood. My employer allows us to pick up ends left behind after cutting out hardwood logs, which I bring home in the company pickup a few sticks at a time. (About 6 loads/cord.) All that it costs me is time, and a little fuel for my saw and wood splitter.

I'm working full time, to don't have spare time for gardening.
I shop at SMith's Food [owned by Kroger] and have 3 stores I run around to about once a week. I can always find milk marked down to half or even less. yesterday, 11th, bought 2 gal's for $1.19 ea, sell by date was 20 NOV. I never pay full price for milk.

Milk prices here are controlled, vendors can't sell them below a set amount.

The right HP will heat effectively to below 0, and beyond

Fine if you're going to drink that much in a short time. Not so much of a bargain if it goes bad and you have to throw half of it out. I use so little of it that it's not worth getting more than a quart at a time.

I freeze it. And very rarely throw it out, but then I drink a lot of milk, 1 to 1.5 gal a week.
I eat cereal a lot for breakfast as well.

In your case sounds like you should just buy the ultra-pasteurized 20 oz bottles.

Yes below zero F it's called Geothermal Heat-Pump!
Air source heat-pump not likely.

They typically don't like cold much (and I have the real stuff here ).

In the roughly 30 years I lived where I am, the neighbour's house has gone through 3 air-source heat pumps.
