The other day I had my dogs out in the fenced in area so they could run and play and do their business. I noticed a strange black dog running near my pond so I brought my pups inside. Then I saw that there were two black dogs loose. I got a couple of pics and went to my local FB page to post them. Sure enough there were others posting pics of them as well.

I decided to see if they would come to me. They were a bit hesitant but came over. I thought if I could unlock the shop they would go in. Unfortunately when I was trying to unlock the door, one of them went up on the front porch and attacked my old cat Moe. I ran as fast as I could with a bad knee, but old Moe did not make it. He ran off but I found him dead a while later.

I was able to get the dogs in the shop and contact their owners. At least the pups were safe. They had run almost 5 miles from their home in town. I'll miss old Moe, but I'm not sure he would have made it another winter.

Sometimes good deeds come with consequences...

So one of those dogs killed your pet cat?
Once you find the owner of those dogs, you should be asking for compensation for their irresponsibility.

What do you ask for, $50, $100, $200, $1000? I could not ask for money, it just seems not right and it won't bring Moe back

I have dogs as well, and I know **** can sometimes happen you have no control over. I know how grateful I would be if the shoe was on the other foot.
You should have seen how happy those pups were to see their people and vise versa.

Accidents happen, but some situations are an accident waiting to happen. Did the dogs have collars, licenses, and owner identifications on them? These would be indicators that the owner cares for the dogs vs. letting them roam free and unattended.

"Failure to confine a canine" is a legal charge that carries some consequence. Hopefully, the owners understand that they did something wrong and will correct it to avoid future issues.

No it won’t.
But morons who let their dogs stray into other people’s properties and kill other people’s pets need to be held accountable.
If they don’t feel the sting of a financial penalty, they will just do it over & over again.

This country has a HUGE lack of accountability for their actions.

I think you’re a pretty understanding person. I’m like Haydude, I’d be upset at the owners of the strays.
Anyone lets their pets come over and kill my pets on my property is getting a knock on the door with animal control or the cops with me.

I think the OP has the right attitude. I commend his understanding and self control. I can't honestly say that I would be so understanding. The OP is obviously a better man (y)
Not for the general welfare of he and his neighbors.

Laws to protect the public were definitely broken here. They vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but I know of noplace in America, where packs of dogs are allowed to roam free onto other private property and kill their pets.

I am not asserting that the OP not forgive the owner of the vicious dogs. I would forgive them. I am asserting that the owners of the dogs be held accountable for their actions, so another “moe” or worse, maybe a small child isn’t killed next time.

Quick related story: Growing up, my neighborhood was safe & peaceful countryside. One family had a vicious german shephard. One day, it attacked one of our neighbors, just out walking his leashed dog along the road. That was incident #1.

Next, I was walking along the road at the age of 9 and it attacked me. I got 60 stitches and my mom had to practically hold my dad back from shooting it. I was inches and a few seconds from being killed. That was incident #2.

Then a man came to the dog owners house. He was called there by them to tow one of their cars away that had a mecanical problem. The same dog attacked the tow truck driver, an elderly guy and gave him over 80 stitches on the shoulder & chest. That was incident #3.

Finally the dog was euthanized.

Just like people, dogs can start showing their signs of viciousness by first attacking pets, then moving onto people. The owners of these dogs need a $$$ penalty and a strong warning to keep their dogs confined onto their property.

I’m all for forgiveness, but NOT all for letting vicious dogs kill people’s pets….or worse, maybe a child.

I don't much like cat's, even my own however; I would be very upset if a stray dog killed her.

In this case dj1701 called the dogs over not realizing the dogs were going to attack his cat so I think that's different. Sort of like good deeds don't always turn out like you expect.

No good deed goes unpunished?

Agree, but none of this would have happened if the owner of the strays would keep their dogs on their own property, right?
Stray dogs were a big problem in my area in the 70’s. Some roamed in small packs, killing smaller livestock, chickens, cats, other dogs, biting people and getting in trash. Stricter dog laws and enforcement of them solved that. And we are much better off as a community for them.

For one thing, they were not a wild pack of dogs. They had collars and did not exhibit any signs of being vicious. You could tell they were confused and had not been loose for very long.
I know if mine got loose I would hope that someone would care enough to try to help them. All I was thinking was, I have to get them secured before someone shoots them or they get hit by a car.
Never crossed my mind that Moe was in any danger. I have never had a dog that hated cats, but I know it's not uncommon. That in itself does not make a dog a horrible pet.

Never said they were. I said WE had them in my area in the 70’s and they were a menace to society.
They had collars and did not exhibit any signs of being vicious.

But they killed your cat? That sounds vicious to me. Most dogs we have would lick your face and wag their tail, not kill other peoples animals, but whatever.

You are right to think that way.
All I was thinking was, I have to get them secured before someone shoots them or they get hit by a car.

And secure your other pets from attack!

No, it does not. We’ve had many dogs. Seldom, they got off our property, but never killed a neighbors animal.

Hey man, your pacifist attitude in all this is commendable. The point I am trying to make is those dogs demonstrated a tendency to kill. That’s a danger to society.
Luckily it wasn’t, but like I said, what if it was a small child?

I’m thinking about the the bigger picture here.
