Isn't the point of a surge protector to protect the receiver from a power surge? Seems that plugging directly into a wall socket is just asking for problems! I have all fragile electronics pulled into protectors or battery backup UPS.

That would seem logical and I thought the same thing, but the Dish support people argued against it.

From the Dish support site, "Note: The HomePlug-to-Ethernet adapter and the DISH Network satellite receiver's power cord should both be plugged directly into an electrical wall outlet. If a surge protector is used, it must be approved for use with HomePlug devices, and the adapter or satellite receiver must be plugged into the HomePlug outlet of the surge protector. Do not plug the adapter or satellite receiver into an outlet that is controlled by a wall switch or into GFI electrical outlets."

IMO, any (sensitive) electronic device should be plugged into a quality UPS device and not just a (so called) "surge protector"...

The biggest problem I have found with electronic devices (especially televisions) is having them connected to circuits with open grounds

Again IMO, if a receiver box is so sensitive that common surge protector causes problems...then the fluxuating levels of (unprotected) regular household current would be just as damaging or worse...

for $5-$6 a circuit tester is well worth the money to check for properly wired outlets/grounding...

Oh- well the data over powerline thing explains why some surge protectors would be a problem. Better ones also incorporate a noise filter- which would be doing its best to block the data it sees as "noise"
If one is just needing AC power without the "Homeplug" or other data over power "trick" then a surge protector is a good idea.

As unreliable as the Dish equipment is, I recommend you always keep the maintenance agreement. I had a VIP622 DVR, it went bad, was replaced with a VIP722, it went bad, went bad again and again. Replaced 4 times in a years. A royal pain, but has not cost a penny so far.

I can say that I hate the VIP722 and can't wait until Directv has their multiple TV thing going good AND has TIVO.

I am also mad at Dish because I missed some football games when they were in "negotiations" with Fox Sports and they frankly didn't care what the customers thought about it - they are all about gigging their customers while not wanting to pay anything for their programming.

I had Directv 10 years and had NO trouble with them or their equipment - only changed to Dish because the HD DVR is supposedly better. But when Directv gets back together with TIVO that should change.

Yep, when we were full time RVers, I always checked RV park outlets before hooking up the RV to their electricity. Reversed polarity is the most common problem, but open grounds will be found, also. Before I bought this house, I checked every outlet in the house and found one open ground in a kitchen outlet.

When we bought this house 5 years ago, the phone company was Centurytel (now CenturyLink), and they said they could provide our Internet service (currently DSL) and Dish satellite TV, all in one package, so we did that. After two and a half years, I was disgusted enough with Dish that I changed to DirecTV.

Day before yesterday, I got a letter from CenturyLink stating that "As a result of the new relationship between DIRECTV and CenturyLink" they were offering a whopping $5 a month savings to customers who "bundle" the two. It ain't much, but $5 is better'n nothin'. And I'm only guessing that means CenturyLink has ended their relationship with Dish.

 We are on CenturyLink as well. We saw the bundle they were offering and we are curious if we could save some money buy moving Directv to Century.

The wifey called up Century and they said if we are an existing Directv customer they cannot move us which makes sense. I still want to know what Directv is charging new customers and what Century will charge us for the same service so a few more phone calls are going to be made to find out. :D

I kinda figured we would be doing good to save $5-10 a month.

Dan, it didn't make a lot of sense to me because the lady I talked to at CenturyLink said I'd still get separate bills, but that our DirecTV bill would have the $5 discount in one or two billing cycles.

Bird,

That is odd. I did not expect there would be two bills.

I figured they would not let us "transfer" if we were an existing customer though.

Sure wish we could beat the Directv addiction. They are really good at billing us to a point were I want to drop the service but will not. :D

Dan
