Thanks, Short Game. ... been a Ruth Stout fan for years .... used to read her stuff in the Rodale Organic Garden publication years ago. But look at me now....I must have a couple tons of hardware for my three acres by now.

Wow, she's awesome! Thanks for posting! I also have a 40ac "farm" with lots of hay. I'm going to try gardening this way. I do use hay for mulch around any ornamental plantings, and my high bush blueberries.

We all read Ruth Stout 40 years ago. I am sure now we all could not help but over-complicate everything we thought we had read. Seeing that made me want to do the head-slap.

Could you use wheat straw instead of hay? It's a lot cheaper around here...and to use her philosophy why do something you don't have to do (like pay more for mulch haha).

I think the term "hay" is misused here. She and many others are refering to straw, I believe. Although I'm a city boy, I use wheat straw in my garden and think the various kinds of "hay" are used as feed. Wheat straw is common around here. It's great for animal bedding, "hay" rides and wind breaks around dog house for winter.
