Ok so maybe rusty is not the correct nickname, but i have purchased a year old 4320 with several rust spots. I could find probably a hundred if i tried. Over half are on the 3pt, thats expected. Several more on the loader, not a big deal. But the ones around the engine, such as exhaust manifold and such have me bothered. Am I overthinking this? I will probably make it a winter project to use a gel or whatever to remove the rust and apply touch up paint. But am I going too far?

Was the tractor ever around salt or other corrosive material like plowing or blowing salt treated snow?? That sort of use will rust any metal equipment. Fertilizer is also very corrosive. First thing I do after spreading fertilizer is pressure wash all equipment involved, ie, tractor and spreader. Don't ask how I know all the above. You have to look hard to find any rust on my year old 4320 with 400X FEL.

You do not give much information to your tractor bro's to go on. Is your tractor the 101 HP 1971-72 model or the 48HP 1990's? Do you live by the ocean with ocean salt spray? You give no location where you live? Did your tractor spend time under the ocean with a hurracane?

I am guessing that you have the big older deere. The tractor is solid, surface rust is just that on the surface. The beauty is underneath in the heartbeat of the BEAST. With a hundred HP you have a BEAST.

Gotta read his post a bit closer, Fuse!

I wouldn't worry about surface rust at all...not even around the engine and exhaust manifold. Just clean it up, prime it and paint. After all, it is a used tractor.
Pitting rust...where it's really damaging the metal...that's different. Sooner you fix that, the better.

As far as cause...what did the previous owner use it for? Manure can cause rusting as can some chemicals. As far as the manifold...might have been heat.
I'm assuming the rust was there when you bought the 4320 and it didn't bother you then. Just fix it and move on...
