Rounded off drain plug

Pipe wrench has been tried again and again, both by myself and two others more experienced. Same result each time, material being sheared off the plug. If that result is due to improper grip and/or operator error, that's down to the lack of clearance around the wrench adjustment knob itself.

In other news, made hay yesterday.

Not as of June 5.........

Cold chisel, sharpened good, applied to cut into the surface in such a way to produce torque to undo the thread. First direct blows to cut a notch in a close to radial direction, then when a good notch is established, shift the angle to being closer to tangential to the surface to make it rotate out. This is my standard method with nuts that strip out. In your case it is a plug, but apparently there is still a bit sticking out that one can access.
Whenever I tried that method, the only thing that came off was the skin on my knuckles.

I cant believe this thread is still going, what in the World can folks make so many post over a rounded off drain plug. I am sure the OP has fixed that plug months ago.

Not a chance, this is not just an ordinary rounded off drain plug.... :talktothehand: :talktothehand:

Seems the moment of opportunity has passed when the plug could have come out either by doing it right or farming it out to a shop that would do it right. The plug appears pretty knarled up now and will either have to be done by a shop or it will stay in there forever.

X2 on this.
I had to replace fan clutch on my Ford truck a while ago. 38mm nut I think it was. I tried everything, nothing worked. Then I used my air chisel with it on left edge of nut corner. Wow! It turned, then next corner, etc. It spun off in a minute.
New one I installed with wrench, locktite on threads.

I’ve also used the air chisel method on fan clutches with success. Did you mean antiseize instead of locktite? The fan clutches of the 90s at least on Chevys are bolted on. They’re a pain to deal with but at least they do come off.

I used locktite because if it backed off fan would go into radiator. It's held on by one large nut. That air chisel I discovered by accident. It was fantastic. image_2019-06-29_20-57.jpg

If you used the air chisel to tighten the new one, you may be replacing it sooner rather than later. Using an air chisel has been know to take out the front pump bearing.

We used to do the air chisel thing at the dealer if we were too lazy to get the right tool :/

Next time you try a wrench, hit it straight down, not it a rotating direction. For some reason, that pops them loose.

No...air chisel to remove only, proper wrench to install. One holds the four fan blade bolts while you turn the 38mm wrench.
Air chisel to remove similar to westcliffe01 said.

What’s the right tool?

I bought this set, it actually goes on an air chisel.

I would call any wrench that fits properly the right tool. Adjustable, combination or specialty.

Using an air chisel to grab a corner will work. I would not call that the correct tool since it is somewhat destructive.Screenshot_20190702-181259_Samsung%20Internet.jpeg

Drain plug is not worth salvaging? Maybe Kando wants it as a paperweight, being the famous rounded off drain plug and all

I have had the worst luck with removing tapered rod ends like used in steering linkages. Sometimes nothing works. Then I have sawed the end off flush and drilled a series of holes usually starting with 1/8" brand new sharp bit and concentrate to keep it centered. Then open it up to the largest size possible without breaking out of the original ball joint shank.

By the time all that core material is removed, the induced stress from being tightened by superman (or too much impact wrench) is released and it lets go without cooking anything with the torch....

I'm replacing the drive belts on my MTD riding mower and just preparing to try to get the engine pulley on to put the new belt on. What a pain in the butt. So hard to replace a simple wear item like a belt.... But my MTD snow blower is even better, I was being forced to split the machine to get a cover off so that I could work on the carb... I ended up slipping off part of the cover so I didnt have to split the machine to get the captive cover off.
