Rounded off drain plug

That's what I'm thinking. I need to devise a way to get it rigged in my small milling machine to get a straight hole. I gave my drill press to a young friend who moved across the country and at my age I really don't want to invest in another. There is always a machine shop but I've always been a little hard headed and done my own tough work.

Jim I have never found anything as good as impact to remove stubborn screws. I use a 1/4 inch battery powered impact to remove anything small. Electric or Pneumatic both work wonders on things. Push hard and hold on. It will either come out or twist off. Either way you know what you have to do next.!.

Well I tried with my 20 volt 3/8 drive DeWalt impact driver and because of poor positioning and my natural clumsiness it slipped and the down pressure pushed the plastic end plate and bearing housing further down on the shaft. With all the magnifying aids I could not see a division point between the armature shaft and a screw head. I even had the wife ,who's vision is much better than mine, look and it seems there isn't a screw there.Everything is a pressed friction fit and the slot I thought was a screw head is just a slot to hold the armature shaft while removing or replacing the pump impeller on the other end.
I'm going to go beat my head against the wall for an hour or so and finish this tomorrow when I'm in a little better frame of mind.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. If you want to see a breakdown of what this all looks like, it's a Sequence 750 pond pump. They just don't give much detail. I guess they would prefer you buy a $450 pump rather than a couple of $5 bearings and a $8 seal.

Is the screw head rounded or dome shaped designed to be driven with a straight blade or Phillips driver?

If so the Knipex will prob not work.

After soaking with penetrant I would use an impact driver.

Those impact drivers are the greatest device since sliced bread.

The favorite tool for motorcycle mechanics.
I like it so much that I have 2 in my tool box 'Just in case' LOL.

Steel screws in aluminum will always be seized and this tool will always persuade them to come loose with one simple rap of a hammer.

That's for sure,I discovered them when I got into boats, many years ago. Talk about a hostile environment for fasteners, take a little salt water and dissimilar metals and you need all the help you can get.I bought my first impact driver at a marine swap meet for $5 and still have it. It's the best of 3 that I have accumulated over the years.

What brand is the one you like the best?

My old favorite that I got at a marine swap meet is a BICO,I don't know if it's made by a big tool co. or what. The guy I bought it from said it had been his Dad's and that he'd had it for years. When he passed away the son didn't even know what it was or was used for.
I really like the feel of it and it works well.

I'll try to get a pic if the rain ever stops and I can get down to my shop.

Here’s the first Knipex tool Im disappointed with. I own several pairs on knipex pliers of outstanding quality. My buddy is a snapon addict and in general I wouldn’t trade my Knipex pliers for his snapon. He bought a pair of locking pliers. I wanted to see how the knipex compared against vicegrip and snapon. I got these in the mail yesterday and I’ve never used them so I can’t say how the teeth quality is. The jaw rack is pitiful. I’ll be sending these back. If these were $5 China crap you could probably squeeze the body in a vice and tighten them up but these weren’t supposed to be crap. IMG_1546.JPGIMG_1547.JPG

To be honest with you, they don't look anything like the Knipex tools I have. Without further research I would say they could be counterfeit. I didn't know Knipex made locking pliers.

Okay did go to their official website, and they are probably legit. But yes indeed send those back! I'm shocked actually.

I'm still around. Gave it another try when changing engine oil on both tractors. Got a good hold, just not enough leverage/strength this time around.

So you got the (pipe) wrench to grip/hold, but not enough strength to turn it? Maybe use a cheater pipe and/or a helper?

Good to hear you are still chasing after it. Should keep us going for another 100 posts!

With what?

After so many tool suggestions you report that you "got a good hold" but neglected to say what tool got the "good hold".
