I was wondering if anyone has ever had a rough running / backfiring issue when they had a loose pole on the starter ? It’s a 12 volt system and everything else seems to be ok but the stud on the starter is loose and will not tighten up properly. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

If the starter spins the engine it's doing its job. For rough running look into your timing or something else in the ignition - points, condenser, distributor cap, wires, etc.

Is it backfiring through the carb or the exhaust?

Need pics and more detail.

The loose pole could indeed be the problem, because I believe the pole on the starter is used to basically distribute power to the rest of the tractor. IE: the starter pole is used as as the common distribution point instead of the battery terminal. So wiring issues there could indeed cause issues.

Fix what you KNOW isnt right....like the starter. Then begin troubleshooting
