Rough cut mower gaurd

So last year I inherited this Land Pride rough cut mower and promptly beat the **** out of it hammering it into every hidden stump and bolder that I could find hidden in the fields that hadn't been mowed in about 5 years. The peanut butter steel guard and the housing were all beat in and I regularly had to pick the mower up with the loader and beat it back into shape with a sledge hammer.

Yesterday I picked up the 8" x 96" x 1/4" piece of steel that I had cut and rolled for a new guard. Todays project was to install.

The curve was a bit off...

...so I put it in the redneck press brake.

I also added chains at all four corners to make it easier to pick this thing up with the loader.

Trimmed the corners off. You can also see the skids that I added to the front to keep the front of the mower from diving into the ground when the tractor falls into a hole.

Curious, why didn’t you go with a rear chain guard instead? Seems like the rear bands will always get bent up backing into stumps and whatnot. Of course, yours is now a lot beefier than the original band, but they still keep material from flowing out from under the mower.

Thanks for the comment there Tractorable. Would chain guards prevent the mower from riding up and onto stumps and stones while mowing backwards?
