I hit a stump yesterday. The blades folded, but it certainly made the engine stutter. Can you damage an engine through undue force from a pto?

short answer : YES
do you have a slip clutch or shear pin protected pto? I would assume you have the clutch set too strong or too high a grade bolt in shear pin. There are several threads going about each. If it shuddered the engine something should have "givin" first.

I helped change an engine on an old Massey Ferguson 35 a few years back, where the rear flange of the crankshaft snapped off when a bush hog hit a big rock. Slip clutch didn't give. Crankshaft did. Massey's have a coupling in the tranny (in PTO driveline) that SHOULD have let go, preventing this disaster
