A few weeks ago I queried the group about a device for hauling rocks. Which I discovered is called a rock (stone) boat. The suggestion was to make it out of the hood from junked car. I did just that. The hood cost $2.00! The total cost was about $50.00, but most of it for the chain, and I bought twice a much as I really needed. The final device is easily pulled by my ride-on lawn mower. My wife, the primary user, is quite pleased with results. The neighbor kid is also sent by it. He plans to build one next winter to pull behind his 4-wheeler in the snow!

Mike, I never tried it myself, but my younger brothers told me about using a car hood for a sled, pulled behind a car, in pastures and on dirt roads. They said it worked great for short distances, but before you went very far, friction would make it too hot to sit on and they'd have to bail off.:D

Hi Bird,

It is my teenage neighbor kid with the scheme. No sense, no feeling!

Being a Trucker I use and aluminum dock plate. works perfect for moving stone and packing soil. I have a pet rock now that I use for soil compacting

The car hood should work great as a rock boat! There are also a couple of guys near where I live that fish gig every year out of boats they made by welding two similar old hoods together at the cowl ... they're actually quite functional boats (although they are somewhat lacking in flotation - wouldn't want to get them in fast water!)
Nothing like a little "redneck inventiveness"!
