I live in Michigan, and our roads have been going downhill for years. But it really seems to be hitting bottom here, no pun intended. Our roads are more like 3rd world status, and things like bridges are close behind. I know part of the reason is that we have the highest truck weight limits in the country, 130K. It doesn't seem that any improvement is coming. How are the roads in your state doing?

Our roads are improving, especially rural roads. It's because of the oil/gas boom and its influx of big dollars to our state's coffers. We really have the petroleum industry and its effect on our state economy to thank for roads without potholes. All profits do not go into fat cat's pockets. Some come back to the people to improve our lives. :)

Michigan resident here, too. You really have to watch carefully or you will be buying a new tire and rim.

Roads with heavy water truck traffic are sometimes impassible in the spring, dirt roads are a mine field of pot holes. Right now I am keeping my snow tires on for a bit because they need to be replaced for next year and the roads are beating them down.
Once spring hits and the oil/gas company's can begin repairing the roads they will improve right now its rough out there.

Bad here too. Our weight limit is 100K GVW. This winter has taken a real toll on the secondary roads.

Not much for a oil or gas industry here, and our population has been declining to stagnant for years. We have a lot of bridges that date back to the 30's that need replacement. They just closed a road near here, the bridge is unsafe. My road is a dead end road, the bridge fell in years ago, they never replaced it.

I live in Pennsylvania, we are numro uno for deficient bridges, and our roads have not improved in the last score and ten.

I can sum it up as:

Here in Vermont so much tax money has gone to social programs and efforts to recruit refugees to settle here there isn't much left over for piddly stuff like maintaining roads and bridges. Assimilation has been a mixed bag. The Bosnians resettled here have proven to be an extremely hard working group. The Somalis not so much. But all agree that the roads suck. :)

Time to face the music guys.
We here in the good old USA have never, never able to pay directly in fuel tax what it takes to keep our transportation system smooth and our bridges safe.
Nor were they ever able to.
