Stop blaming governors favoring businesses - keep the thread from going to politics.

Yeah, my pension got taxed so that busineses could be given a tax break. Wonderfull.

AND. as we all know, the tax break was touted as something that would create jobs here...and NONE have been created. I suggested in the local news that they reinstate the business tax cuts and put the 1.8 billion dollars collected toward road repairs.

Ya your correct.A rich man writes a book of laws and regulations a poor man must defend.Somewhat like war were the rich kid goes to college to avoid getting drafted and the poor kid goes to to fight the battle for the Rich/poor folks.I guess your correct it,s all about the business and money.

It's a long running theme here, and probably everywhere for most part. Policies like high weight limits and low enforcement of limits made some kind of sense when heavy industry was paying the bill. But most of the industry left, or gets tax breaks so the tradeoff isn't working to well. The cuurent governor didn't create the problem, but he hasn't done anything to improve the situation.

On the small scale of Industry, ME:

$112,156 in vehicle excise taxes collected last year
$14,172 received from the state for local road maintenance (non-state highways). From state fuel tax receipts.
-----------
$126,328 collected for roads in 2013

For the 2014 budget, adding up all the road related amounts totals $187,392.

$187,392 - $126,328 = $61,064 in property taxes that will be spent on local roads. This is approximate because the total excise taxes for 2014 are not known yet, but will be similar year-to-year.

Our annual vehicle excise taxes are not cheap, they decline yearly with the value of the vehicle. My 2011 1-ton truck excise taxes this year were $392. $437 total with the state registration fees added in. In 2011 when the truck was first registered the total was close to $800.

Some information that may be useful.

Here in Kansas, our state highway system is always ranked as one of the best in the country - local roads are another story. 30 years ago our roads were terrible but thanks to some brave legislators willing to approve fuel and sales tax increases, we've had the revenue to devote the past 30 years to building the quality roads we have today. It could have been even better had a good chunk of that revenue ( $1.5B over the last 10 years) not been "stolen" to pay for shortfalls elsewhere in the state budget. Still, when compared to our neighbors ( sorry MO, NE, OK, CO), our roads are noticeably better.
Unfortunately, our good roads are offset by the other crazy politics that have been going on around here lately.

Good info, thanks. Seems that we spend a lot of money, 50% more than average. Also, the info is mostly on federal interstates or state highways. Local roads don't seem to get evaluated?

All the roads around me are shovel ready!
You could get into a low orbit on some of the frost heaves we have around here!

That's a pretty good description. We have pot holes in our frost heaves.
