Restaurants adding fees

Warrenton Virgina added a "visitors tax" to our restaurant bill last year. I will never spend another dime there.

We have the opposite near my WA place… a small gas station with general store with a little bit of everything…

The folks are so nice… even letting oversized parcels be dropped off and offer free coffee that the locals really support it… gas is 10 cents a gallon more but keeps me from driving the 20 mile round trip to town.

I don't get the hate on self checkout. To me it's way more convenient than standing in line (and without fail, get in the line with the slowest cashier). I'm smart enough to figure out the scanner. Scan, pay, get on my way.

Do you pump your own gas? If so, what's the difference? You're not an employee of the gas station either.

I agree. I don’t ever go to walmart but our little grocery store has self checkout, I’m way quicker than many of them because I want to get out of there and I was running a cash register at my second job about 47 years ago.

also not spending 45 minutes, i spend about 30 seconds to do gas.
45 minutes doing what?

I’m usually the only one at the self checkout in my closest Home Depot.

If enough people do that, maybe they will get the message.

The last time I was in HD was 4 weekends ago... at about noontime Saturday. They had 2 self serve islands open, and a register in the garden section. I looked at the lines, then looked at the hose repair ends I was holding- and suddenly realized that I didn't need them after all.

We also only have self checkout except for the return desk, garden and contractor desks… at least it’s been this way but I heard there might be a law mandating a minimum ratio of cashiers to self checkout?

The local Walmart here just pulled out all the self checkout registers. Not sure why, or if it is being done corporate wide.

I believe Walmart is cutting back on the self-checkouts. The theft through the self-checkout lines has been astronomical.

I just checked online and you're right. Walmart is removing self checkouts in selected stores, not corporate wide.

Theft is definitely a factor in certain locations. As long as it doesn't exceed the savings in employee reduction allowed by these self checkouts, they will remain in place.

I would imagine it's in stores/regions with high amounts of theft.
The couple of WMs nearest to me have relatively few locked display cases, mostly electronics but last summer I was out of town on a business trip and realized I'd forgotten to pack a change of socks. Went to the WM nearest the hotel, socks were out in the open, but regular underwear was locked up. Really? People steal underwear?? This wasn't even in a very big city.

Sam's has automated the receipt check on the way out. They still have someone standing there, but the receipt is read automatically.

Our kid used to like to hand the receipts and get a smiley face on it.

I don't have a problem with checking receipts. Theft prevention keeps my prices lower and I'd rather have that than locked up merchandise.

lol, that's funny too. Short side story about my deck. I asked several companies for a quote, not an estimate. I made sure it was perfectly clear that I wanted an out the door price, and any additions had to be discussed, as in changes I made. To the winning builder, I made sure again, that price quoted will be price paid, unless I changed something. I told him an estimate is an educated guess, a quote is a firm price. he agreed. I made a small addition, and was told $600 more. I agreed. Came bill time, his original price went up 50%, 12k to 18k. He said supplies were more expensive that he thought. If I did need help in future from any trade, I would have told him to pound sand. I agreed to 3k, which brought him up to two other bids.
If the time from the quote to the time for work was an extenuated period of time I could see the increase. If the time was less than, say, 2 weeks, I would have the guy he should have quoted better.
My guess is he quoted to get the job and then made the excuse of suppy cost increase to make up his shady quoting.

Nothing compared to today’s add on restaurant fees, but I still remember my disbelief for getting charged an extra buck for maple syrup to go with my Belgium waffle. She later explained, the common fake syrup would have been free.
I remember another place charging 50 cents for pads of butter, but fake butter margarine would have been free. Times have changed, but they haven’t.
One other old memory.. I remember being peeved with an unexpected adder charge for the little sour cream container for using on my baked potato… on an already expensive steak dinner…good thing I didn’t say ok to croutons on the salad 😂

Since Sam's is a national chain, do they tally losses for just Texas (82) or nationally and divide by 601 ?
