Is it possible to overfill the reservoir? Hy-Tran oil level is about 4 inches below the filler cap, but the level on the dipstick shows that it is full. I suppose there's room for another gallon or so in the reservoir, but won't this cause the system to bind?

If it is full then its full, adding more oil won’t fix the problem. make sure all of your supply side connections are tight, could have an air lock in your filter, but to be honest it really sounds like a dirty suction screen, or an obstruction in the suction line.
