I brought one of my FEL cylinders to the shop to get the seals replaced because it had started to leak. Well the seals were not that bad but the rod was pitted. The shop said he could fix it for about $400 or I could replace it for $216+ shipping. I opted for the new cylinder but I was wondering if it is possible for the average Joe to replace the rod?

See if you can get a service manual for your loader from the dealer. This should show all the steps and then you can decide if you want to try it yourself. I got a serivice manual for my JD 148 loader and it does come in handy.

Replacing the rod is very easy if it's an OEM rod. Some shop custom make rods from stock so that could be why it's so much money. See how much the part is (if available) from your dealer.
