Hey all,
I'm a wildlife area manager for the DNR and am looking for a recommendation on replacing a tractor. We have an old ROPs, 2WD 2750 that has seen better days. We have mostly used it for planting and mowing, and would like to use the new tractor for some spraying as well. We also have a 6220 w/ loader and a 7210 (our main tillage tractor and also our tractor on which we can mount a boom style mower).
I was originally looking at a 5090E/M series, with cab and MFWD, but happened upon a 5525 with 3K hours... Our budget is incredibly tight and we won't be able to buy the 5090 until maybe sometime next summer, whereas we could afford the 5525 right now.
Our sprayer is a 300gallon w/ 20' booms, our mower would either be a semi-mount Deere MX10 or Rhino Turbo 120. Our planter is a 6 row Deere 1750 w/ no till coulters (no fertilizer or pesticide attachments). We also have a no-till drill, 10.5' wide.
Any thoughts on whether the 5525 would work, or should I just hold out for a 5090M? Aside from the cost, I also like not having to deal with DEF on the tier 2 engine.

Thanks.

hi - a good friend had a 5525/cab/loader i used it many times moving brush, mowing with a 6 ft bhog, pushing snow, put in a culver, raised up a road bed for the culvert and ditched it out, id say i spent around 35 to 50 hours on it total, i was surprised at the power it had, i wished it was a little heavier in the deep snow we had it would ride on top and break thru because i couldnt push it all the way down to the ground liek a big tractor would.

that was my only complaint with it, my SS didnt do that, it is about 4K lbs heavier and i have tracks on it LOL

i wouldnt be scared of it but it wont be able to keep up with a 6 series, pretty much same engine it might be a tad bit lighter than the 5090M worse case u could alwasy get the 5525, see how it goes and then trade for the 5090M

oh lastly not sure what trannie you like but the one i used had the l/m/h ranges with 4 gears in each range if i remember right . it had a shuttle lever

Thanks for the comments. It seems like we may not be able to end up making the purchase afterall; purchasing as a government agency is a much more convoluted process than if I was buying as a private citizen, unfortunately...
If we can't make the purchase I'm going to be looking at a new 5100M or 6105E... Seem like fairly similar tractors overall, and with our government discount pricing is fairly similar. The M seems like a better series overall, but the 6 series is a little heavier duty and may be a better option for us in the long run - though price may be the overall deciding factor due to our budget limitations (50-60K would be the max, the 5525 is right at 36K and would free us up on a lot of other purchase).
