Replaced starter still issues

So I thought my starter motor packed up, I replaced it with a new one, but the tractor still failing to start. I can hear the starter turning but its not turning the motor. Any ideas?

Is the motor locked up in some way? Can you leave in a high gear and rock the tractor back and forth to turn the motor?

All cable connections are clean and tight from the battery to the starter?
Battery is in good shape?
When not bolted to the tractor, does the starter run ok?

Battery seems good, starter is turning, its a new starter I just installed, seems the old one was fine, both turn fine.

I towed the tractor with my truck to get the motor to turn, but still no luck.

I noticed that on the clutch there is this contact, which does not make contact, not sure what it is?

Looks like a switch to make sure that the clutch is disengaged so that the tractor is not started in gear?
So when you pulled it with the truck, did the motor turn?

The motor seemed to turn, I had it in gear and out of gear and the wheels did not lock.

Is there any corrosion inside the cable terminals (where the lugs are crimped) that could reduce the battery current to the starter?
Looking at the video, it looks like the starter is engaged and trying to turn the motor, but is not getting enough current.

Another thing to try is jumpering an additional battery or charger in case the battery is weak

Check the Bendix drive gear on the new starter and male sure the tooth count matches the original. If the tooth count is different, it will not be able to properly engage the flywheel.

Remove the starter. Bench test it to confirm the bendix is kicking out. Look for witness marks from the flywheel on the starter's gear to confirm you have the right tooth contact.


If your hots are tight, to me it sounds like your ground stinks or you have a weak battery.

Did you load test the battery? Just checking battery voltage doesnt cut it. You need to load a battery to 50% of its max cold cranking amps for 20 seconds and watch voltage.

Thanks for the help everyone, so I checked all the fuses, removed them a reseated them, connected jumper cables to the battery. Eventually the starter cranked the engine and she started. There was a whole lot of hootin 'n hollerin as she sprang to life.

Seems my battery 3/11/2020 is the most likely culprit.

She's purring like a badger!

Thanks for the help everyone, so I checked all the fuses, removed them a reseated them, connected jumper cables to the battery. Eventually the starter cranked the engine and she started. There was a whole lot of hootin 'n hollerin as she sprang to life.

Yep. Thanks for the update. However it seems kinda early for a 3year old battery to die. I have the original battery still in my 2014 CK30…. but it’s ALWAYS on a maintainer. All my stuff is. Might be a good idea for anyone, especially if the tractor sits a long time….

Some batteries just die early..luck of the draw. Most of the exide batteries i use in my generators i service last 7 years, but i just had one that lasted 12 years. Occasionally i get one that last only 5 years.

You don’t hear much about premature battery death when they’ve been on a maintainer….
Granted there are some cheap batteries out there too.

Hopefully someone will read this about batteries:
Two weeks ago Mom's Hyundai Elantra wouldn't start, Mom's 97. So I put battery on my charger while my wife & I visited Mom for a few hours. I went out, unhooked charger and my Fluke meter read 12.61v. Elantra fired right up! Running, Fluke showed 14.22v so alternator was fine. I shut it off & it started fine. Then I shut it off and did a load test. It was in the yellow ("iffy"). Then I looked...battery was a Walmart Dad (rip) had installed in 2012!!! So I called the garage they've used for many years...good honest shop. They're an Interstate dealer. $200 installed. I thought, it's my 97 yo Mom, what's $200 for an Interstate? I took car over & they installed one (Sept. 23 date) so a fresh battery. They cleaned terminals, etc.
Couple days later Mom calls, car won't start!!! So I go over & check...Fluke reads 1.91 volts!!!! Charger back on...same few hours...12.75v...I load test & well into red!
Anyway I get it started, dealer installs another Interstate, all is well.
So NEW does NOT = GOOD
That 11 year old Walmart held up pretty well and may outlast the Interstate.
