Bad idea disconnecting the ground cable to the battery when the tractor is running. If you didn't have electrical issues with your alternator/ V reg you likely do now.
Before you replace anything, take a meter and test voltage at battery with tractor off. Then see what it reads with the engine running; then again with headlights turned on.
Report back results.
