Ran over a piece of a round file and it managed to puncture my rear tire. It is about a 3/8" round hole. Can I just use a tire repair kit and repair it from the outside or do I need take the wheel off and haul it to a tire service? What are you guys doing in this situation?

I've never tried a "plug". I've always had a tire patched from the inside. However - since a plug is so easy - I would give it a try. If it doesn't work then you could have a tire service put an interior patch. Very little lost - trying a plug first.

Tire repair kit from the outside will work just fine. You'll need a decent kit though, one with good metal handles, and good plug material. Ream well, then use the lubricant. (might need a hammer too, hence the metal handles) I've got a plug in mine currently. Its been there for 3 years. No leakdown yet.

Sidewall puncture is a bit of a different story.

You can plug it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll give it a try. It should be much easier than wrangling that big tire to a shop.

The tire plugs can work, but using multiple ones you are likely to still have a slow leak.
I have used plugs and I keep them on hand.

I also have some patches that I keep on hand that are similar to a plug that you would need to break the bead and get it over the rim to reach inside the tire, then the attached stem gets pulled thru the hole and the patch is glued in the tire.
With a hole from a 3/8" object I would use a stem type patch and then apply a tire boot over that.
If you have the 14.9-24's they can be done on the tractor.

I use this to break the beads; AME Little Buddy Manual Tire Bead Breaker — Gempler's
and this is the style of patch I prefer;
Xtra Seal Tire Repair Patch, Dia 3/8 In., PK24 13-674 | Zoro.com

It is a lot more work then shoving a couple of plugs into a hole.

3/8 hole on a low pressure flexy tire is to big to plug for a lasting repair, have it fixed right.

That's not gunna last:laughing:

Will to,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,until the worst time possible,then ruin the tire making you wish you had fixed it right.
