Re-routing exhaust on JD 3005

I was just looking on Deere's website, and it seems they have recently changed the design of the vertical exhaust. When building a tractor, I noticed the price for the kit has been upped from $289 to $325, and the new picture make's the exhaust look like it route's to the side of the hood, possibly dipping under it, and then up. Looks as if they wanted to avoid the whole "have to cut a hole in the hood" thing or, they wanted to change the way it ran as possibly mounting the exhaust farther to the left deflects it better.

When I do a build on a 4WD 3005 I see a price of $300 and the pictures is through the hood as it is on my 790.

Now that I look at the build for both tractor's, they have two different vertical exhaust kit's.
#LVB25884 $325, Fits 3120 - 3720
#LVB25829 $300, Fits 3005

Seem's odd they would have two different types. I'll have to check to see if mine is the "through the hood" or "out the side" version.

After looking at a 3203 on EBAY, with the vertical exhaust through the hood, it makes me believe that while they may have different part number's, I think they are the same "through the hood" and general design. One of the picture's on EBAY is taken at the same angle as the vertical exhaust kit picture for the 3320 off Deere's website, and it looks exactly the same. The angle of the picture off Deere's website just make's it look as if it is an "out the side" design.

Mech, How did you know where to drill the hole so the pipe would be centered? I need to install a vertical exhaust on my 790 but dont want to screw up the hood.

There should be a hole outlined on the inside of the hood indicating where you need to make the hole. This is how it is on the 3x20 and 4x20 series tractor's, I would figure it's the same for the others.

Nothing outlined inside the hood on the 790, probably because it is a metal hood. Your have to install the elbow and then lower the hood on it, take a pencil and outline the top of the elbow where the top stack will attach. You find the center and then move it back 1/4 inch since the hood isn't all the way down at that point. It was very difficult for me to get my hand in to do this. I outlined the outside half, then completed the circle with the hood raised. I might have been off a bit but it looks almost perfect.

You'd think they'd at least give you a guide or some kind of marking's. Though they probably were/are just reusing the same 790 hood's that were on the tractor's with the side panel vertical exhaust, no need for marking's then.

And its a lot easier to include a mark in a plastic mold than to stamp it into a piece of sheet metal. I knew there was no mark on the hood but I was expecting some kind of template with the kit, so was disappointed also. Use a marker that makes a mark easily, like a felt tip pen. I tried to put grease on the top of the elbow but the hood only actually touches the outside of the elbow so that didn't work. If you can get part of the circle accurately you can use something else, the same size as the elbow, to draw the rest of it with the hood up. When I found the spot to drill I did a pilot hold first, checked it again, and then used the hole saw. Then had to file the hole to make it smooth.

Why not cut a 1" or 2" hole in approximately the right spot, using hole saws
you already have, then use a nibbler to finish it out? That would work for
a steel hood, but a sabre saw could do the final cut in a plastic hood. You
make the final cut to be exactly in the right spot.
