Re-routing exhaust on JD 3005

It's not just JD's thinking, every manufacturer that sells a CUT diesel has it exit in that location, stupid if you ask me. I have the same problem as you do though, I can't stand to breathe the fumes.

I suspect you see so many of those front-exit exhaust pipes on newer CUTs
because they have hinged hoods, rather than the older side panels for
engine access.

I much prefer the vertical exhaust and I have heard of people with hinged
hoods who could easily pull the stack off without tools when opening the
hood. I am not going to cut any hole in my hood, however.

Has anyone tried routing the front exhaust up along the side of the grille
guard and straight up from there? I know FEL clearance is an issue, but
it could be done.

Mine is routed under the tractor. I can smell diesel fumes pretty bad and it does spew soot all over the FEL.

I am torn over whether I like the exhaust better in the vertical position. Over the years I have accidentally tore things up pretty good while bushhogging under trees or otherwise getting too close to obstacles. I wouldn't mind seeing pics of some of the add-on sections people have come up with for keeping it routed underneath. My biggest concern would be making sure the pipe doesn't get exposed to getting struck by rocks or debris while working.

Here are a few pictures of what I tried. Not convinced yet if it helped. I want to say it did just because I spend a lot of time thinking it out and finally doing something!

I don't know about this "cutting a hole in the hood" idea. The 790's of just a few years ago had the pipe actually coming out of the side panel, not the hood. If you do a google image search for "Deere 790" you will see what I mean. It looks like a better answer than cutting the hood.

Your second and third pictures clearly show a mounting plate with a notch out of it, under the tractor. Is that for mounting a front blade and/or other front mounted attachments? Maybe part of the mounting for a belly mower?

Do to the hood style change, Deere did away with the side panels and went to a one piece hood and redesigned the exhaust. I was reluctant at first to cut a hole in my hood for the vertical exhaust, but its really not that bad once you get by the thought of cutting a brand new hood.
The vertical exhaust kit only takes about 30 to 45 minutes to install and is a good solution to get away from the drawbacks of the standard exhaust.

Here's the old style hood with the exhaust coming out the top edge of the left hand side panel.

My Century had the exhaust that turned down at the front of the tractor too. It was very annoying with the dust it kicked up, plus the smoke burns my eyes.

After a particularly annoying day out on the tractor, I stuck a crow bar into the end of the tail pipe and twisted it up. It now goes straight out the side. In a moment of anger, I fixed it.

The newer 790s actually still have side panels, w/o a hole for the exhaust so you are either going to cut a hole in the hood or the side panel. The proper kit for my tractor goes though the hood. I guess they changed it to look more like the 3000 series. I don't think it was a good change because it requires them to have the under exhaust be the standard and the vertical exhaust be an option since you can't go from vertical to an under exhaust w/o replacing the hood. Exhausting below and in front of the driver, in my opinion, is a bad design.

Guys,
Thanks for all your suggestions advice and pictures. I finally decided to take my 3005 to a muffler shop and have the exhaust run back to the rear. The "muffler man" took great interest and pride in helping. We were able to reuse the bracket attached to frame and we found two other places to bolt bracket on to keep the pipe firmly in place. One midway back where there was an unused plate with 3 holes and then used a bolt at rear axle that was part of the three pt. hitch attachment. If these pictures load for me, they will show what we did. I am very satisfied with the results! The cost was only $90.00. Feel free to call if you are thinking about this and have questions.
