Once I shipped a heavy industrial cobbler's sewing machine to a collector.
Only option was P.O. with weight limits so I split into 3 parts and did a very careful job of parceling. (plywood, foam pads strapping etc)
I marked parcels 1 of 3, 2 of 3, 3 of 3.
Well they somehow managed to fracture a casting, (probably dropped from height).
The PO wanted the damaged parcel returned (for an additional fee) but I managed to talk them out of that and accept a digital photo.
Now the fun part.
The wanted to settle for a minor amount but I insisted on full sale price and quoted the fact that it was one shipment of one item in 3 parts.
The fact that I marked 1/3,2/3,3/3 won my argument for full claim.
Then since the buyer kept the damaged shipment he later reported that he brazed the broken part and had a usable machine.
Got to be a rare win/win case of shipping damage.
