Rambling BackRoads

US Hwy 2 would NOT be the choice if your object is going from WA to NY and make good time - - for darn sure. Just about the time you get up to cruising speed - here comes another small town with its 25mph speed limit. And its that way ALL day..............

Yep, that was the way it was back when. Almost every major highway went straight through every town, no bypasses.

Took a few this past weekend. Sunday was a nice late November day by Ohio standards, 50's, low wind & sunny, so headed down to the camp to mill around a bit. Some of the township & county roads in SE Ohio hill country are just gorgeous. With trees mostly bare now, you get a better long range view of the land, the elevation deltas, the hidden cabins. I can easily spend 2 hours and never get 20 miles from camp! Also put in a nice leisurely 6 mi. hike in the Hocking State Forest. Spent the better part of 10 minutes watching a pileated woodpecker go from tree to tree, sounding much like a jackhammer in the quiet forest. What a magnificent bird! Such a day is always a soul-cleansing "reset" to the normal hectic work day. So thankful to have such a place to escape to. :)

I remember going to Hocking Hills state park a few years ago with my family. Very nice walking there.

Indeed, the Hocking Hills region offers some of the best hiking in the entire country. So many spectacular natural features. The state parks & preserves are all beautiful, but I find the state forest trails to be particularly satisfying. Much less crowded, with the freedom to go off-trail. I find new & amazing things every time I go, and I've been getting lost there for over 40 years. :)

I remember we were down in that parking lot and the car's compass wouldn't work and neither would the GPS. Had to drive up out of there before we got signal.

Here's a shot I took several weeks ago from one of my favorite fall spots....the upper rim of Conkles's Hollow. Fall colors were late this year, but vibrant none-the-less.
