I see on Houston's Craigslist once in a while someone selling them pretty cheap. You may check there or Austin's Craigslist.

I just went to a RR yard where I saw a big pile of them and asked the forman. He said "we're not supposed to do that but it costs me money to get rid a them. How many do you want ?" They were not the best, they cul out the best ones. But they were fine for making my corduroy road out in the woods.

As I understand it, due to creosote and environmental issues, RR no longer sell tyes.
Same goes for utility companies and ploes as far as I know.

Piloon is correct, at least in Western New York, they want them to go to a secure landfill! "Thanks GreenFolks"! All this stuff could be re-used (Garden bunks, pole barns etc., instead of land-filled! ~S

Is there an Atwood's in your area? They sell them for about $10-$12 each.
Wow if you can find them they are twice that here...unless you are real ambitous and want the tracks too:D

Found some at McCoys building materials for 12$ each. Going to use them to build a raised garden.

Any suggestions on where to buy used railroad ties in the Austin area?

I have been getting them from Whittlesey Lanscape in Round Rock

Whittlesey Landscape Supplies | Round Rock & Austin TX

But went by their last week and they didn稚 have any good one said they haven稚 been able to get any for over 6 months. Normally they sell them for $16, he told me I could pick through what they had for $10 each. After looking at them, I left with an empty trailer.

Austin Landscape Supplies (between Round Rock and Georgetown on I35):

Welcome to Austin Landscape Supplies.com

Adverstises them on their website at $22 each for N0.1 and $17 for No.2s. I haven稚 called them yet to see if they have any, and if the web price is the current price.

So creosote treated products are not illegal. That only impacts lawn furniture, back yard fence, and deck material. Anywhere children can pull off chips and eat. The anti creosote movement is amplified because the big box stores sell primarily into those purposes and choose to CYA and just not carry them at all. For industrial and agricuture purposes you can still get and use post treated with creosote. You just have to seek them out.

I have not picked where I will be getting my creosote posts from, but I will definately be getting them. They will outlast every alternative. They will outlive you.

Make sure you wear heavy gloves whenever you handle them. I used to work at a lumber yard and the slivers from creosoted RR ties would fester quickly.

I had Cresote get on me at a swimming area, when we were out by the floating platform. It made my skin not tan in that area for years? So Use long sleeves and protect your self as, fresher product just might be more harmfull to you?
