rachet tie downs-tractor hauling

I only used ratchet tie-downs for transporting implements. Chains if I ever get a trailer large enough to transport my unit. But, first I would have to get a vehicle large enough to pull it!:rolleyes:

A lot of people tend to over-tighten their straps. If you have a strap rated for 10K that you crank down so it has a static load of 8K then you only have 2K left for any shock loads. The whole beauty of nylon straps is their ability to stretch under load but if you tighten them "bar' tight, like a chain binder then you are overloading them. If they are the right size for the load you just have to have them snug to hold the load in place.

One thing that seemed to be missed in this thread (unless I missed it) is a person's failure to change their driving habits when carrying or towing a load. While improperly securing cargo plays a big part in the incidents recalled here, driving habits also have to play a big factor.

And I have to add that the guy towing his boat with just a winch strap is a TOTAL IDIOT. Thank goodness nobody got hurt when that came off his trailer.
