Around here a raccoon size carcass will be consumed by coyotes. Vultures do come in for our dead cows.

When we have the occasional floaters from our koi pond- they usually weigh at least 10-15# as mature fish- we put them on a large stump or boulder at the border of our yard/woods- and usually the vultures, or occasionally an owl or red-tailed hawk seem to get them before any of the land-based scavengers/predators.

Going to be a bit hot here today and there is not a breath of air moving outside. Saw some shadows outside the windows caught my attention. There were three or four huge vultures trying to soar over the house. No wind and not enough heat rising yet so they vultures were flying lower than the trees and skimming the roof. :shocked: Them danged things have huge wing spans and look like the angel of death with they fly that low. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

Our house is on a hill so they vultures and the hawks soar over the house all of the time. The hawks are really cool. The vultures, not so much. Got close to one a few years ago when it was sitting in a tree. You could smell that bird and you could see where it had pooped on itself...:confused2:

Normally, I would reply that, yeah, we have our hot, humid summers but NH is COLD in the winter but after the last two winters with record lows, I can't even make fun of the Yankee winters! :shocked::laughing::laughing::laughing: It certainly was colder up Nawth, but when we keep getting into singe digits in the winter, that is COLD no matter where one be. :thumbdown::shocked:

With the cold I can add layers; in the heat, there's only so much you can do. When I was working for myself and would leave the truck for the day, in summer I would carry 1 1/2 gallons of water along with my other gear.

I've been out beaver trapping at -10, stripped down almost to a tee shirt because I was so warm from chopping ice. The only thing those temps is that if you mess up, you don't have much time to adjust.

I grew up in South-Central Texas. The average temperature might be higher in Texas but the miserable armpit suffocation in NC was definitely worse for me.

One of the awesome things about the USA being so big is there is so much variation. :thumbsup:
