getting ready to buy my first tractor and was wondering when buying new, is there any room to negotiate the price like there is in buying a car?

The short answer is...Yes there is room to negotiate. However I have seen prices on some web sites that I would find hard to believe they could lower them anymore than they were.

Everything is negotiable. Just don't "negotiate" yourself into a situation where the dealer isn't all that good with service and warranty after the sale.

I like to negotiate on price and implements too. In other words, I negotiate an entire package. They seem to have more room on used implements and are almost willing to give them away to sell a tractor. I have purchased three tractors, sold one, traded one. I find most dealers give up between $500 to $2000 on the tractors. Depends on the tractor of course... I like to really work them on implements and options. If they are a good dealer, they want to sell a tractor.

The only thing I have really learned is that tractors are like children. You don't know exactly what you are doing with the first one, the second one you get better, and by the third you have it almost figured out. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Get yourself a copy of the Official Tractor Blue Book (about $16 from amazon.com). The 2006 edition is now available.

You'll find the approximate retail price, the average and high used trade-in price and the average and high used retail price for tractors through the 2005 models.

With this info, you can find the price ballpark for the new 2006 modes and figure out how much wiggle room you have for negotiation.

Does the blue book list dealer cost for tractors? Initially, I wouldn't think so, but I've never referenced the book.

Rule of thumb is that the wholesale price of tractors is approximately 75% of retail. Most dealers need to make around 10% on top of their cost or 82.5% of retail. Since smaller tractors cost less, they may have to get a minimum dollar markup, making the discount on smaller tractors less than on larger ones. Use the above as a rule of thumb in your negotiations. The info was provided to me by two local dealers

Unfortunately, no. The TBB gives the approximate new retail price.

The dealer (wholesale) price has to be estimated unless you can get a dealer friend to spill the beans.
