Put the Chains on Yesterday

Tractor tires can be studded? Never heard/knew that. Do they come with the holes already, or do you drill them?

We studded the forklift that does most of our outside duty. The studs do make little scratches on the concrete but we've had them on for probably 5 years and no real degradation. The studs have self drilling/tapping threads and come with a special driver.

A friend used to just use hardened hex headed sheet metal screws for motorcycle racing on frozen lakes.

I used regular old drill screws on the tires of my lawn spreader that I use for salting my driveway. Worked great!

Which is why the studded Euro-style chains tend to do less damage than "regular old" ladder style twisted link ones. Simply because you will rarely spin a Euro-style chained tire. OK, I have, but only because I was only in 2WD...

No. But I would expect it to work about as well as the plastic sleeves the Grand Tour guys put on their cars to make them into drift-mobiles (spoiler alert: not very good).

I jack up the rear end of my tractor and slide chains under. Then lift the top of the chain put it on tire and slowly rotate tire. For the front i use loader to lift tires of the ground and do as above

That wont work on my rears…man, there heavy.i lift rear of tractor, leave unit in neutral. I lay chain on ground behind tire. I place end on tire and then spin tire . This pull chain up unto tire. Than place tractor in low which locks tire from moving. Next link back side of chain then fight to lock front side.

Thinking I may do mine Monday, it looks to be an almost decent day out.

My kids and I have about 25 hundred feet of private drive which is up and down the hills. We have a four wheel drive 65 hp farm tractor and a 23 hp 4 wheel drive Kubota but we have found that our four wheelers do the job so much quicker and safer. even with chains on I have had problems with the tractors but the four wheelers just keep right on going. They move so much faster and keep the snow rolling off the blade with very little effort. I have a 60 inch blade on a 500 Honda Rubicon. I have plowed as much as 18 inches of snow. The first time through that was a little rough.

I'll stick with my cabbed tractor with it's heat and AC. I only have a quarter of mile steep driveway with an S turn in it.
I only plow down as it just tears equipment up to try and plow up it. Even with the studded chains all around it would chew and dig trying to plow up it.
My 80 engine hp, 65 pto hp tractor tips the scales at a bit over 12,000 pounds, it would pull my 10 foot back blade full of snow faster then I care to go just by clutching her and coasting down.
