Pulled the trigger today on a Duramax

Yea and that depends on where ya are. Here tonight 87 octane was $3.65 and diesel was $3.99, the 91 octane I used for towing is $3.89. The gap closes up real fast that way. So lets see, pay $0.10 a gallon more for 3 times the towing power and 50% better mileage when towing. Hmmmmm which will I pick?
price of diesel is steep here unfortunately. Tonight reg unleaded $3.39, diesel $4.19:(

I look at the annual fuel cost of driving my diesels vs a gas motor. We put 20,000 miles a year on my wife's 08 with at least a third towing a horse trailer. At an average of 16 mpg requires 1250 gallons of fuel at $3.69/gal for an annual cost of $4612.50. A gas motor at an average of 12 mpg would require 1667 gallons of fuel at $2.99/gal for an annual cost of $4983. When I use my 03 the fuel mileage is even better. I don't save money with a gas motor and I much prefer the power of the diesel when towing. Now I can consider the higher resale value as well. :cool2:

Boy I gotta tell you that after having this thing one week, there is no way I will go back to a gas truck. If I wasn't towing heavy. I would go with something like the new mid sized Chev diesel Colorado. This 6.6 Duramax gets better combined, city, and hwy mileage than my 4.7L Toyota Tundra. Both are 4x4 4dr trucks, and the GMC probably weighs 2,000lbs more. I can only imagine what mileage a V10 gets, 8-10 maybe?

Sorry, like I said I won't go back. To me it's like when we towed a 5th wheel the first time compared to years of bumper pulls. It's a 5ver for me from now on. My wifes' 2005 Honda Accord will be replaced with a diesel, if I get my way.

Let's talk after your first repair. My buddy had to put injectors in his. $8000 later he now drives a Toyota.

You can calculate whether the expense of the diesel pays for itself with higher mileage, despite higher diesel fuel price compared to gasoline.

Last time I did it, the break-even mileage was around 150,000 miles, not including time-value of money (inflation, cost of living, or what have you).

What it breaks down to, as DP would agree, is whether you tow heavy loads frequently. If you do, go diesel. If you don't, go gas. You get a better ride with a half ton truck, too. That's why I went from 3/4 ton to 1/2 ton. My back needs a better ride now. And I don't haul as often as I used to.

Then there is the group that really just like diesels. That's great, it's a free country. I really like 'em too, but not at the price today.

Payback with the fuel savings will cover the cost of the diesel option and extra diesel service costs when. Let's not forget the fact diesel costs at least 20% more than gasoline.
Diesel savings over the life of the vehicle and cost per mile is a fantasy.
You just like everybody listening to the sound of your diesel rattle. And the smoke due to the tuner dialing up the power .

My LBZ has 245k miles and still running strong. Has had three head gaskets, water pump, starter and fuel injectors. The new emission stuff has kept me from buying a new one - that and the $60k price tag. Love the power - don't care what the haters ^ or anyone else thinks. Who doesn't like more power.

I paid 40K for a bran new 2006 4x4 GMC Dually crew cab in 2006 FREE three year warranty. So you paid only 10K less with nearly 100K miles. I'm thinkin you paid way too much. Ebay search shows between 15K - 17K as topped price bidding for the same vehicle.
Lastly you can buy a 2014 for STARTING MSRP1: $39,185

Boy this thread went from a "thank you for the info" to a defense site. Personally I DON'T CARE what someone elses opinion is of what I drive. I drive it because I have justified it in my own mind for my own needs. Until the current administration takes even THAT bit of choice away from me, I will keep doing as "I" please.

So at this point if you are against me or anyone else driving a diesel, feel free to post ELSWHERE PLEASE!!!! I also hunt and fish, ALOT, I also trapped as a kid and would do so again if the need arises, and I don't care if it's even legal. So folks need to get off their high "my fuel makes more sense than your fuel" horse.

To those that offered their advice before I bought, I appreciate it, to those that want to hammer me or others for my choice, keep your opinion to yourself at this point, as it's no longer requested. Advice and suggestions were all considered and weighed with MY NEEDS AND WANTS.
