Where do I begin.....
Anyone actually OWN one? I'm talking 7' or 8', drawn type, NEWER models. (Seen a gang of old ones, but haven't seen anything made new in the last 20 years actually in use)

I favor Bush Hog brand, but would consider about anything. I want to mow with a tractor that easily has the HP, but nowhere near the WEIGHT to handle 8' 3-point models. (And don't want to add any weight)

I'm starting to look on manufacturers sites, but would like to have some personal experiences.

I had a 15' woods mower last year with a m95 tractor. From my experience if you have the room to drive/manuever a pull type unit then I would probably go that route. My main reason would be that it seems alot easier to hook up a pull type unit. I could also get the bush hog to run level and I believe it made a better cut than one on a 3pt hitch because the ones on a 3pt hitch are almost always running at an angle. I am looking at an 8' pull type unit hopefully by next year to pull behind my 50hp kubota.

I've got a Rhino 15' flex-wing rotary cutter (pull type). You can't go wrong with Rhino, and even Bush Hog brand makes a pretty decent mower.

I'm familiar with batwing mowers. But this isn't about them. I'm looking 8' max., single-spindle pull-type. Found info from Rhino, Woods, Bush Hog, and a few others. All I've got so far is manufacturers literature. Looking for feedback from someone with one.

I've got a 6" Swisher, it isn't what you'd call new, it came with my Oliver OC3. My 18 hp Mitsu will run it, but you have to get the blade up to speed before trying to move. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I really don't have room to manuver it, but it sure cuts nice. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Any bush hog over 6' should be pull type in my opinion, unless you have dead flat ground. I have an 8' Fred Cain , medium duty, pull type. Used on a M5700 Kubota.

I have an old 7' John Deere. It is a single spindle. Currently the gear box leaks and the hitch was repaired improperly so I don't use it anymore.

When it was functioning, my 45 hp tractor pulled it just fine, even in deep, thick brush. I think it handles rough terrain a little better than my 3 pt but it is harder to turn around in tight places, escpecially woods roads. In some ways it is easier to cut closly around trees since it follows the tractor rather than swinging out in an arch.

The key to fully utilizing a pull type is to make sure you have a cylinder to raise and lower the wheels. This makes mowing in rough, uneven terrain a breeze. You simply raise it and lower it as you encounter bumps, stumps, holes, hills etc.

It is far easier to hook up than a three point.

Having said that, I still end up using my 3pt 6 footer for basic mowing chores and since it has a sliding top mast it handles rough terrain nearly as well as the pull type.

Hmm.. I've got a 10' 3pt mower, and looked very closely at the 10' drawn mowers .. similar models made by howse.

When I went shopping for my used 15' batwing, a JD unit, I saw many 'semi-mount' types that may be an option for those that like some of the features of the 3pt,( like backing straight.. etc.. ) The semi=-mount uits attach to the lower lift arms, do not have a toplink, and use rear lift wheels, or turnbuckle lift wheels.

What tractor are you running this with? and HP? In many cases.. if you are big enough for 8'.. you can do 10'

I've been considering one of the semi-mounts too. Possible for me to use it on either of TWO tractors. (MF 150 OR JD 2440)

I'm kicking around the idea of buying another 37(+ or-) acres right down the road from us. It's cut up into 5 small fields. Nothiong big enough to need more than 8'. Also, gates would limit me to around 110".

I've got the 150 turned up to around 45 HP. It should handle 8' wide so long as I'm just clipping a few inches of grass. The 2440 would handle 10' with little effort. I'm trying to find a mower that either could use. Then I just leave the mower at the property, and which ever tractor is nearest does the mowing.

Long story short... I'm looking for a mower that would work on a 60 HP/7500lb tractor, yet one that a 45 HP/5000 lb. tractor could handle in a pinch.

This ground is flatter than some pool tables I've played on, It's clean too. A pull-type could be set at one height and left there. Probably wouldn't even need a cylinder. (although it would probably get one)

A big issue here is the "urban sprawl" thing that's getting to everyone. I need to be able to transport on public roads so width is important. (or LACK of width)

My brother pulled a 10' Bush Hog with a Case-IH 485 for years with no problems. Rated at 42 hp.
