Pull Over - Question for Law Enforcement Types

If it indeed was a criminal/killer/etc., wouldn't it probably be too late if they are at your door where you could see the ID?

You could be right, Phil, but if you have your doors locked and only open the window part way, you might be able to take off if the "officer" refused to show his ID. I don't know how it is elsewhere, but we were required to carry the badge, the photo ID card, and the "warrant of appointment" at all times and to show them to anyone who asked. And the fact is, that in all those years, I never had anyone ask to see anything other than the badge.

And like Logan, I never stopped any vehicles when I was in plain clothes except when it appeared obvious that the driver was intoxicated. And when in uniform in an unmarked vehicle, I certainly did not mind if someone failed to stop before reaching a well lit, populated location.

Where I live, that could be a 30 minute trip, to a well lit, populated location. Would that get you in trouble? There are little towns around, but nothing is open after 10 or 11. Most of the bars are even closed on weeknights at that time.

Shawn, it's pretty much like Logan said. If you speed up or attempt to escape, yeah, you'd be in trouble, but if you slow down, turn on the emergency flashers, and proceed slowly . . . well, the officer may suspect that you're intoxicated, but before long, a marked car would be joining the unmarked car, and then you could stop. Now I certainly cannot tell you how the officer will react, but any reasonable officer will understand.

Gotcha, I just didn't know when you guys are talking about 'slow down and proceed to a well lit, populated area'. That's not real easy to do around here once it gets past 11.

Of course, I don't think there are many unmarked cars patrolling around here.

You only have to roll down the window enough to be heard and hear.

In the cases where a Poser Po Po was Pulling People Over, they where in it for kicks, aka getting off on the "power" or they where serial killers/rapists. In the first case if you ask for ID they will most likely run like heck when challenged. In the latter case you have a problem. But serial killers who are also usually serial rapist wants to take the victim somewhere isolated. The side of a road is not isolated.

One can always dial 911 and see if they have an officer at a traffic stop at your location. The officer should have called out the stop and dispatch will know the location.

The odds of being pulled over by a Poser Po Po has to be danged close to zero.

I was on the Blue Ridge Parkway once towing an enclosed trailer- a ranger came up behind me and I thought I saw blue lights, a second look and they were off...I kept going. A few minutes later I thought I saw blue lights again but with a second look they were off...what the heck? This went on for several miles...finally I pulled into an overlook and he pulled in with blue lights on. He stopped me because he erroneously thought my trailer license plate indicated it was a commercial vehicle, which aren't allowed on the BRP, but it wasn't. Anyway I commented that I kept thinking I saw blue lights but when I'd look again they were off. He would get so close behind the trailer I couldn't really see his rooftop lights. He said he kept turning them on when an overlook would come up but then turn them off when there wasn't one. The whole thing was kinda funny actually....

Yep, don't call the officer Po Po.

I have heard it used by adults, non adults, gang members and non gang members. Its a southern thing? Maybe? It seems to used in my part of NC frequently. But I don't remember it being use in FL, KY, LA, or GA but then I was young when I lived in most of those states. It was used on an TV show I was watching recently which shocked me. Maybe Andy Grifith? It was an older show so the term has been around for awhile.

I confess to getting a little irritated at some of the slang that seems to originate from some of the young people... BTW I read somewhere that PoPo originated in the hip-hop/rap culture, something I'm definitely not part of
Whenever I hear someone say "My Bad" I always, even if they are a stranger say "Your bad what?"
I get some funny looks but that is part of the fun

And I guess I am a bit out of date; never heard "Po Po" before and had no idea what you were talking about, so I googled it and:

originated in california where bycycle mounted cops travel around in sets of two. they wear vests with giant POs written on them. thus the name po-po originated

So Bird if you are retired Po Po and by definition on a limited income does that make you a Po Po Po...
