I can never keep the PTO thing straight.
An independant PTO will allow you to run an implement while the tractor is not in motion, say a log splitter or a chipper.
A live PTO will only turn when the tractor is moving, say mowing.
Have I got this right.

Kinda not right. . .A live PTO works when you push the clutch in, independent works when the clutch is out when your moving or standing still. Push clutch in PTO stops, release clutch PTO turns. hope this helps. . . John

Both will allow the PTO to operate while the tractor is stationary. The live PTO is normally engaged by moving the lever and releasing the clutch (the clutch has two stages - PTO and transmission). The independent PTO normally has a separate wet clutch pack that is engaged by moving the lever so no use of the clutch pedal.

The older tractors that do not have a live PTO lack the two stage clutch and in this case the clutch will engage/disengage both the PTO and transmission together.

An "independent pto" will opeate as long as the engine is runing, independendent of the clutch position. A "live pto" will operate with the clutch out or part way depressed. It will stop operation when the clutch is fully depressed.

so if the tractor specs state "two stage clutch" does that always mean that tractor has a "live pto"?

Yes - two stage clutch indicates a live PTO. The first stage (when lifting your foot from fully depressing the clutch) engages the PTO and the second stage engages the transmission. Not sure about all tractors, but mine had a stop I could flip out on the clutch pedal that would limit the pedal travel to just the first stage to make sure the PTO stayed running until I was ready to shut it off.
