Well, well, well, And well, again. you don't think a gear tractor can post hole drill and use a backhoe, just as well as hst,??..

I don't think so either. And, considering all the backhoe work they mentioned, they're are probably gonna use the FEL alot also. So then definitely, Nope.

Guessing from you remarks, I bet you ain't ever put 5 hours on an HST to find out.

and "digging trenches and burying lines for water, spetic and electric"..

IMHO.. he may be better off saving the 4k+$ and not get a hoe, and instead rent a ditcher when needed.

I recently put in irigation on my back pasture.. rented a walk behind, self propelled ditcher that would dig a 3' deep by 1' wide trench at slow walk speed. I put in just over 500' of water line, had it backfille dby hand with a buddy helping me, including laying the line and cluing it together in 5 hrs... cost was 80$ rental for the machine.. and it came with it's own trailer.... would have been 120-$ had I kept it the entire day..

I agree also. There may be Way Too much information that the Original Poster wanted. But, better too much than not enough. It's all about the info.

yep.. plenty of info here.. may be too much.. but too much is bteer than not enou8gh. Gives the OP an idea of wht other people can do with various sized tractors.
Peace.

If you think no 'education' is still occuring by the peacefull discussion of what machine fits what application.. then you might have missed the boat at the dock...

still plenty of value in this thread... from all involved parties..

soundguy

Well it appears as though education "may" started again (not totally convinced that it has) but it had certainly come to a grinding halt at the time I made that post. "SOUNDS" as though you should climb down off of your "high tractor" before you fall off and are forced to realize that you are but a mere mortal with an opinion that is no more valuable than the rest of ours ;)

Maybe you should just calm down a little bit yourself before you start telling others too.

You're going to get the ladies thread closed down, that won't be helping her any at all will it?

Oh I'm calm as a cucumber. I have no intention of doing anything that would cause this thread to get closed down. I made my earlier comment about whipping them out in an effort to get the thread back on track. It was obvious that folks were going off on a tangent trying to prove their point to each other regardless of using fact or fiction. Then the gentleman known as "Soundguy" jabs at me about me maybe missing the boat and not being "involved" which spurred me to make my comment back to him about how long a fall he might have. I stand by my comments and my intent of said comments. Have a wonderful day :p

There is no attack in that or any other post of mine. It was merely a possible course correction you might want to consider before you judge anyone elses intentions or observations. :p

I have nothing else to add to this thread so I will bow out before I am drug any deeper into the developing mud pit. Good luck and enjoy the hunt and I hope you enjoy your new purchase when you get it! :p

Too late, we haven't seen SilverHawk for the last 55 posts. Another thread that has fallen to the the gear vs. hydro debate. You would think that after all these endless discussions everyone would understand that different people have different preferences. They are not going to change and there is no reason for them to. I think the participants we see over and over in these discussions just love the fight.

Very, errr, "interesting" thread. Since the water seems to have calmed a bit, I think I'll jump in.

I was recently in the market for a new tractor with FEL. I have operated gear driven tractors my entire life so I was dead set against a hydro tranny until I read some of the advice on this board, pro and con, and decided before I dismissed hydro completely I'd take a test drive. So I went to a local JD dealer and test drove one around the lot for a while and talked to the salesrep regarding pros and cons of hydro. Man, I was hooked but I still had a VERY queasy feeling as I unloaded my new JD 3038e at home, however, 29 hours of FEL work and cutting grass later..... I LOVE my hydro. Absolutely love it. I could not imagine doing some of the FEL work I've done with a geared tranny. For FEL work, hydro is the BOMB and with the way my yard is laid out, I HAVE to do alot of backing up to cut my yard grass with my Caroni flail mower (the wife has flower beds all over the place) and hydro makes it slicker'n snot.

Now, if hydro proves to be reliable with no service issues, I'll REALLY be a Happy Camper.

Just my two cents.
