Mowing Pto Speeds

Can anyone help with the engine revs and gear to get 540 pto speed on Foton 254 the manual doesn't seem to cover this

What gear do you travel in it seems like you would have to be in low range

My Jinma 284 has a green line on the tach. That is where you obtain PTO speed. I mow and bush hog in 1st gear with both the gear selectors in high unless its really deep stuff I am bush hogging then I put the creeper gear box in low.

By the way its about 2250 rpm on my tractor if I remember right.

You can achieve the proper PTO speed in any transmission gear. PTO speed is in direct relation to the engine RPM (540 PTO rpm @ 2200 engine rpm seems to be very common) You then select the proper transmission gear to get the ground speed that is appropriate for what ever you are doing.
In short, set the engine rpm at about 2200 so the implement you are using is turning at the proper speed. Then try different transmission gears to get the ground speed that is comfortable for the task at hand.

The important thing to keep in mind is that most of these Chinese tractors' tachometers have a green band that is the best operating RPM for the engine - the manual also usually tells you where the engine puts out the most torque. This is area you want the engine to be operating at as much of the time as possible. Diesel engines run best and live longest when run at their peak torque range - this is why they have governors instead of simple accelerators.

The 540 rpm for most implements is a general rule of thumb, and it doesn't have to be exact - somewhere between 475-650 rpm is probably just fine. You set the engine rpm at the speed that nets you peak torque (green tach band) and that will probably be pretty much what gives you that rpm at the PTO. Adjust your ground speed with the transmission gears.

Don't lug a diesel engine! They hate and they die young that way. Same as running them too cold.

Thanks very much for your help. The tacho on the foton doesn't have any lines at all just the revs. As you said the slasher seemed to cut really well at around 2000 - 2200 RPM

Yeh, I've got the same tractor and I run about 2000rpm with a 6 foot mower on the back and it cuts real nice and smooth without bogging down the tractor at all. I know what you mean about the green line on the tach. For some reason, foton didn't put one on. Check out my other posts if you have issues with your foton as I've had a few hiccups but nothing major to this point. I've had mine for 3 years now with about 300 hour on it so far and for the most part, it's been a reliable tractor for summer and winter.

Just guessing .. most mowers and brush-hogs have a reccommended operating speed .. especially in regards to safety. I have a Jinma 354 .. has a two speed pto, and the knob was labled Backwards ... oops. Sooo ... cranking up a 6" chipper ... sounded kinda fast ... duhhhh

Visually just looking at the pto shaft .. it's obvious .. but, who wuddah thought .. knob was back a**wards. Anyway .. HF's gotta photo-sensor tach for $30 on sale for keeping stuff that spins working safely. 66632

I have a FOTON TE254 and use a 64" snowblower on the TPH. I use the 540 PTO speed and run the engine at 2200 rpm and it seems to be the right speed for torque and PTO speed, engine seems happy at that speed.
