PTO shaft to mower stuck on tractor

I have attached a couple of pics of a device I was going to help a mid west US farmer market about 12 years ago. Perhaps a pair of tie rod tools could be utilized for a wedging effect. Hopefully you've already solved your problem. Good luck.

I'm a bit confused as well....

Did you unhook the mower from the 3 point linkage and drive the tractor away from the mower so the shaft separates in to two pieces?

Sometimes grease and clipping muck holds the shafts together so tight they will not slide together when you try to pull the coupling off the PTO shaft.

Once you get them to slide in the middle you find that was the problem rather than the PTO connection.

You should know what kind of shape your splines were in when you put the shaft on. Were they sloppy or burred?

I would add to what you said to unbolt the comp. pto shaft from tractor then drive it out from the back side. When the u jount is turned all the way then there should be a clear shot to the shaft. This is after he does what you said, I think you might be right.

ps

watch the direct pull son that pto shaft.. might damage the bearing carrier or snap ring / bearing ont he tractors pto stub shaft!

Really good point...

It has happened to me with a Woods finish mower. I had to align the safety cover slots for the center zerk fitting and soak the square shaft with PB.
It still was a bear to get loose and really clean up. The same shaft stuck on me a couple times when I fully compressed it for storage and hung the loose end to the mower with the shaft cover safety chain.
Three problems with the shaft in 20 years isn't bad though. I always greased the center zerk but didn't think of the build up freezing the shaft till it happened.

With the OP having the shaft lock pin removed the coupling will either slide off the PTO or the shaft will separate.

If it really is stuck on the PTO end I would suggest trying vibration on the coupling with a little air hammer while the shaft is separated.
It is amazing what a little vibration will do to loosen stuck stuff.

first i would hit it with a large hammer the shock of the hits should loosen it up a bit, maybe get a chain binder on it with some good tension then hit it again with a large hammer ,also soak it good with penetrate oil.

pacerron,
this is a draw bar pulled mower that uses hydraulic lift to raise and lower. both tractor and mower are John Deere and the PTO shaft had a ring around it that would turn approximately 1/3 turn to release the PTO. when turing this ring it push down on a pin that released the pto shaft, after replacing the turn ring twice I just left it off and depressed the pin, that the ring had depressed when turned, with my thumb to release the pto. When I could not get the pto off by depressing the pin, I though the pin was the problem and took it out. Turns out the pin was not the problem. So in sumation, my pto shaft should slide right off, but will not budge.

pacerron,
Forgot to mention that the shaft is seperated wiht half the shaft on the tractor and the other half on the mower. When I use the tractor's front end loader i use a bungy cord to hold up the tractor half of the pto to keep it off the ground.

Update?

How'd you get it off?

I'm not fully following you, but I think it is a mechanical problem with a clip, and nothing to do with a seized fit. Proceed carefully after you put all the hammers and torches away.

Perhaps due to a poor fit the retaining pin has caused a ' bur' on the groove or edge of hole on his tractor PTO shaft. Big hammer should do it and maybe even a couple of smacks on the yoke in a counter clockwise rotation first. Not familiar with the model tractor but if it doesn't have independent PTO engage PTO lever with engine off to make this last suggestion easier. Just be SURE to disengage lever immediately after so you don't accidentally forget start tractor.

Thanks for the clarification.
You must have a bur someplace. It sounds like you rarely take it off if you leave it hang.
Have you tried putting a couple blocks under the shaft to get it close to level and taking downward pull off it?
Since you have all the locking pins removed will it slide forward any?

On Ford and New Holland tractors we have a recess milled in the PTO shaft for the lock pin which is part of the shaft coupling.
Most are just spring loaded pins but some are a rotational wheel similar to what you describe to be part of your tractor.
On our shafts you can slide the coupling a little beyond the pin point if you hold the pin down against the spring pressure.

I would be leary of beating on or heating back there. You might get lucky but pay a big price down the road.

The vibration I suggested was from something like a little air chisel with a piece of soft rod stuck in the end or a pin punch
piece made for the chisel. It is not the hard force but the vibration that does the job.
You can beat on pressed in bushings and bearing races all day long with a punch and 3 pound sledge without budging them,
but a few burps from a vibrating chisel usually walks them right out.

Anyway, good luck.
I better defer to the John Deere guys on this one.

Any progress Copperman? Just wondering if you solved the problem.

Is the device you posted a picture of still produced?
