I cut my shafts so I have about 1 inch of compressability at horizontal. With some of the emplements I have to hook up the pto before I back close enough to hook the 3pt. If the shaft is offset and not straight out the back to the emplement, you need a bit more slack. If the emplement sways very much from side to side you don't want the pto bottoming out.
