PTO Generators

I know nothing about PTP Generators and need some answers!

Do they have to run at 540 rpm standard PTO speed? If so, that means that on my NH, the engine rpm's would be at 2400!!! I wouldn't think that the Generator would require that kind of speed. Obviously, a person wouldn't want to use this for powering a home for extended periods!

Any one have first hand knowledge?

Yes, they have to run at PTO speed if you want to have AC power at 60hz. The frequency of the AC power provided by the generator is directly proportional to the input shaft speed.

I have a 20KW PTO generator and run it at 540 PTO rpm....So what ? and yes for extended periods...Same PTO rpms I run the bush hog for hours and hours...just keep up with your maintenance..these tractors were made to be run and do their job..Where in your owners manual does it tell you not to run your tractor at 540 pto rpm for an extended time ? See my point...?

You can run the motor at reduced rpm if you have a pto speed increasing transmission (belts, chains, gears, ropes, mice or pedals). For example I can run mt 540 rpm alternator off my lawnmower which has a 2000 rpm pto. This is done with a 3:1 reducer.

I'd advise you to get a "Kill-a-Watt" frequency and voltage checker, because the tractor tachometers can have error in them. This plugs into the generator or home outlets and displays a digital readout of the current state of your supply.

When it rains heavy here, the county at times parks a tractor next the retention pond and pumps the water elsewhere. I know this is not a generator, but if the surrounding area keeps shedding enough water to keep flooding the road, they will leave the tractor there ... running the pump 24 hrs a day.

Seems to me a pump would need at least as much power as a generator.

There have been times during the rainy season or after a hurricane that the tractors will run for more than a week.

When the water threat is gone, they hook the mower back up and keep using the tractor for mowing road sides.

Never seems to hurt the tractors.

I believe the design tractors to run their PTO's long and hard.

As far as the power goes running to your house if you live in an area with extended outages you should look into a battery system to provide the power than use your generator to charge the batteries, it will be much cleaner.

I thought I read somewhere if you run the PTO for an extended period it should be in HI or LO range (manual transmision) and neutral to keep the oil slinging onto the transmission bearings. Anyone else hear about this? Specifically on a JD 850 is the model I have and read about.

Personally, I'd not run a PTO generator off my tractor.

Stand alone generators are cheap, I bet in some cases if not most cases they are less than PTO.

Easy to set up, I just role mine out of my garage, start up and plug in my pig tail.

If it was run off my tractor, I'd need to go out to my tractor, start it up, drop off what ever is attached (typically backhoe), then hook up the generator, then move cars so I can park it near the house, then plug in.

I'd much rather put hours on my $400 6500 watt generator than my $20K tractor.

If the generator fails, I buy another, still way ahead of the game.

My stand alone has worked great for me, ran it 4 days straight a couple of years ago with no issues. Neighbor ran his 8 days straight. Would've sucked to put 200 hours on my tractor if I had been him without the stand alone.

I've had the same questions.......my Kubota has a 2 speed PTO


540 RPM=2876 engine rpm.........960 rpm=2722 engine rpm

12.7 kW(17 HP)

I've wondered if running the tractor 24/7 @ 2876 rpm would be wasting energy and loud......

Could a PTO Generator of lesser wattage output be run with the PTO in the high speed (960) setting and run the rpm's down to attain 540 rpm's.....without doing the exact math it seems it would run around 1500/1600 or so rpm's.......Seems it would be better on fuel and noise......

I'd also worry about running out of fuel at higher rpm's as the tank on the tractor is small in comparison.
