3-Point Hitch PTO Generator arrived today

I think diesels are governed by the injector pump itself, presumably internally. Not a mechanic though.

Amen to that! Lots of standby generators are diesel also, and they start up and go wide open! No idle time what’s so ever. Just keep fuel to it and let it run!
Not true. One. they never run 'wide open' as you state. they run at rated rpm which is 1800 or at least my Generac does as the generator is a 4 pole skew wound head and the one I have starts, warms up for 45 seconds and then assumes the load via a transfer switch.

I also have a Generac propane fired 21KW unit for the house and it also runs unloaded for 30 seconds prior to assuming the load via another transfer switch and it operates at 3600 rpm and has a 2 pole skew wound head.

Big difference between 'wide open' and rated rpm.

Standby generators have to operate at either 3600 rpm or 1800 rpm (depending on how many poles the generator head has and the engine, whether diesel or propane / gasoline driven. 3600 and 1800 results in 60 Hertz output.

There is a difference between a Diesel engine designed to power a generator and a Diesel in a subcompact tractor. I’m hoping someone can provide an explanation about a governor in a small tractor.

The governor mechanism on a B2601
CalG, Thanks for taking the time to post these diagrams. I also called Vahrenburg (sp?) MF dealer in Missouri and they confirmed that with a GC1720, there is a governor that will maintain the engine RPM within reasonable limit as the generator load changes.

The plot thickens again. I talked to the MF dealer in Fallon, NV where I got my GC1720 and their reply was no governor. I tried to find a national Agco/MF technical support contact but they seem to want you to direct technical questions to your dealer. Maybe I need to conduct a poll and interview every dealer in the country and go with the majority response. Not such an important question but kind of puzzling how hard it is to get a definitive answer.

If a dealer doesn't even know that the tractors they sell have a governor, I'm not sure I want any business with said dealer, specially if any repairs are needed in the future.

Obviously, tractor engines, technically pretty much any industrial engine, with mechanical injection system have a mechanical governor. The common rail systems do it electronically.

Back to the mechanically injected engines, some, like my Branson, have the governor built in the injection pump, others like most <25HP Kubota, Yanmar, Iseki, etc engines have the governor on the timing gear that drives the camshaft for the injection pump.

I can't find a parts catalog for the GC1720, otherwise I would've happily put a page of it here, showing the governor.

I'll share a picture from a random Kubota model instead. I believe it's a B2620. #150 are the weights of the governor. There is another page showing all the linkages and what not.

PTSG is 100% correct and ALL diesel engines will have a 'load governor' of some design, either a mechanical or electronic compensation 'governor'. It's intrinsic to diesel engine operation.

basically what it does is when the load increases the governor increases the fueling rate to compensate for the imposed load and maintains the pre set rpm to a point and engine builders refer to that as 'torque rise'. Even big truck engines (like the 3406 Cat I have in my Barnyard Buick has one). If I start to engage the clutch under load, the governor (mechanical) will bump the fueling rate up to maintain the base RPM until I apply additional fuel, via the fuel pedal.
