Much to their credit I have received an email response from Woodmaxx already this morning, and I'll share with you all. "Hi Gary. I'm not sure how that happened but I will get you the parts you need immediately. They will go out priority mail today. Look for a tracking number in your email. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Sincerely, Will" I have also already received the Order confirmation.

Sounds like good customer service at least.

I agree, looks like the set screw backed out. Shouldn't happen but understandable .... The frustrating part could depend on where you were at in a job that you also had to quit...

Setscrews and Keys were a recurring problem for me to the point I now lock-tight them just to make sure.

The last time I was in the middle of a concrete project... not a good time for the mixer to go down.

We are just about ready to pull the trigger on a Wood-Max... brother wants the larger model and I think the smaller with hydro feed would be OK...

Well I have the MX9900 and except for this small setback with the hydraulic pump pulley its has exceeded my expectations, its simply a beast. The repair parts are on their way with no cost to me and they should be here before the weekend.

It looks like and easy fix and I should be back in business Friday morning. I have to get the new pasture fences up and get the sheep and horses out of the barn.

TBN advertisers and member field reports swayed me for and against a lot contemplated purchases.... starting with my BX23 about 12 years ago.

So far the feedback has been dead on...

This is exactly why I ordered a WoodMaxx chipper. Any make can and do break from time to time to me it is how it is handled that really matters!
Glad to hear it is working out well

Nice thing about Wood Maxx, is they sell the parts for my Jinma too (which is the WC8). I get my knives and drive shafts from them. Fast service, good prices and you can actually talk to someone.

Being able to talk to someone in the know is getting to by the exception today.

Maybe I don't look hard enough but I haven't seen any serious woodmaxx owner gripes on the internet.I am sure happy with my machine and customer support so far. I don't regret laying out the cash for mine a couple years ago and only wish I had done it sooner.

That pulley is a bugger... I tightened, retightened, locktighted the darned thing, and never got more than a day's work in without having to reassemble it. I ended up tacking it onto the shaft with the welder, and now it stays put. Still wants to twist up belts and wear them out quickly, but at least it stays together and chews slowly instead of falling apart and failing all at once.

Do you also have the MX9900? If you do then I'll start keeping a closer eye on that pulley. I wounder if the reason for the problem is because drive pulley runs off the fly wheel shaft and the vibration that is generated from chipping is transferring through to the belt to the pump driven pulley. The way the belt got all chunked up in such a short time would indicate there is something dramatic happening on the pump end of the belt.

Brown40, I'm curious do you make frequent changes to the feeder speed while chipping? I do and I wounder if changing the speed is some how changing the torque on the pump that in turn could be causing the chunking of the belt that then increases the vibration and thus the loosening of the pulley.
I'm not and engineer so this is all just speculation.... Food for thought.

I have a 'Value Leader' which is another Chinese version of the basic design. I think the debris swirling around and building up at the base of the gearbox pulley, the hammering from the PTO that box feeds, and the vibration off the unit itself all played into the pulley problem... the allen key would give up before the shaft. They seem to just eat drive roll belts... having the belt exposed and drawing gunk into the pulleys accounts for most of the wear. I bought the heavy duty green ones once, but they didn't last much longer--I have concluded its a wear item. I don't vary the RPM's at all really... my machines torque peaks at just under 1700 rpm, so I run it 1850-2100. If I have bigger stuff I'll crank it up a little to get the flywheel going. Its awfully loud to blast at 2600, and blows fine at the lower speeds.

A person named Will at Woodmaxx contacted me this past Monday and informed me that the replacement parts had been shipped. The parted arrived on Thursday, and I noticed that the new pulley is a lot heavier duty than the original one and it also has 2 set screws, 1 on the key way and the other off set 90 deg.

I installed the new parts yesterday and gave the loctite setup for a full day. I plan to use the chipper today so I'll provided an update later on how it goes.

Good to hear, sounds like they are always trying to improve the product!

We used tapered shafts with a keyway and a locking nut on demanding applications in the fab shop... never had one of those loosen... and needed persuading to take apart.

image.jpegimage.jpegGlrret, after seeing your failure, I decided to look at mine (the bearings were do for lubricanting anyway). My set screws were tight but the belt already has cracks in it. I have about 10 - 14 hrs on mine. Needless to say, I just order a spare belt. Did your old pulley look like this?

I would check your idler pulley (the white pulley on the long bolt with all the washers) to make sure it is not wobbling around and that the bearing is not bound up. It looks almost like it is dragging and causing the excess wear on the back of the belt (note that the center of the belt where the pulley drops down is not worn but the edges are).

FYI, just saw this chipper on Craigslist in northern Colorado. Not a lot of info, but from the photos I think it might be an SC5540 (5 inch chipper/shredder). If that is correct, $2K might be a good price.

The ad says: "...3 point wood chipper, used roughly 15 hours, like new, stored inside. $2100 OBO, new ones are running $7500..."

Only the ones made from gold are priced that high (just in case the link dies, adding photos from CL)

Sure are right there! IF it is a Echo 5540 the MSRP on the website shows it at 2,995 - he is trying to make people think it is worth a LOT more than it is....

The pulley that went bad on mine was the one on the pump, I can 't see it in the picture you provided. Here is a picture of mine when I discovered the problem. This is looking lower between the drive and the idler pulleys.
