I have a Yanmar 1700D and would like to mount a generator powered by the pto. The generator needs to be driven at 1800 rpm. I'd like to use belt and pulleys to increase the pto's 540 rpm. Will someone point me to a web page that will help figure out the correct size pulleys needed? Any advice, recommendations etc. are welcome. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Looks like the first will do it.

Just a word of advice. I used to run a 15 KW PTO set with my JD 770 (Yanmar). Worked very well, albeit the tractor screaming away at FULL RPM. Thought I could use a 2:1 gearbox and run the tractor at half RPM. Many times during a power outage you only need a few hundred watts. Anyway, the tractor would not even run that thing in that configuration with no load at all on the genset. Guess it was just out of its power band.

The reason to run the tractor engine at rated rpm is to provide sufficient angular momentum to the generator when a large electrical starting load is applied. Run it just slightly below the peak torque rpm. That gives the governor the best accelerating control as needed. The motor was designed to run at rated rpm, too. For mechanical durability (motor mounts too) as well as fuel economy.

get a gear increaser set. many heads are 3600 rpm and simply have a 540-3600 box. you can get them for whatever poles you need. ( 540-1800, etc. )

better than belts, IMHO.

I think 12kw will be stiff on a 1700.. I moved my Gen off my 1700 to an 8n ( then a 660 ) for continuous high load. Extra hp and flywheel handled large starts better

I think the 1700 is about 20 ENGINE hp, the pto hp will be 6 to 8 LESS...

With 13 pto hp, it will properly run a 6.5 to 7KW gen set, and 20% LESS than that, for continuous use...

On something like a generator where the tractor is not moving can you use the full engine hp?

to me i would say yes, tractor standing there, and engine running high RPM's for 540 at PTO. a lot of grain elevators, to water pumps, to square bail elevators, to just simply rotary cutting down in the pasture no wind movement what so ever, and radiator nearly pack full of crud, while the rotary cutter behind ya just smacking away.

as long as engine stays cool, there should be no issue of tractor standing still running something from the PTO.

Moving or not, tractor engines are designed to only be used at 80% max engine power, for continuous duty...

I can run my WinPower PTO alternator off of the mower driveshaft on my tired 22 hp F-935 without any problems. I run everything except the house A/C. Its on a separate meter so I can't bridge it over. PIC00017.JPG

The genny is 540 input rpm, so I use a speed reducer. You would not need that to run your alternator at engine speed.

You should be able to run pro hp rating continual.. Otherwise a tractor would be useless to mow with, etc.

Whatever the pto is, divide that by 2 for a rough estimate of realistic, problem free power you can generate.

Not bad to have a little more generator than tractor. Adds built in thermal protection .

I'd get a 10k head for a 1700, and expect to make 8.5k out of it as long as it had diesel.

What does "pro hp rating continual" mean? I don't understand that phrase??

SR

Pretty sure his phone auto corrected PTO to pro. So it would be the continuous PTO HP rating (as opposed to the peak PTO HP rating that it can only do for a little bit).

Thanks, that whole sentence confused me... lol

Tractors are rated at MAX pto hp, but continuous is 20% less... I "guess" that's what he was saying?
