If phasing is the issue (as indicated by the drawing you posted) I wonder why phasing would be important on a bottom mounted PTO, but not a rear mounted PTO? I've never seen this on a rear PTO.

Phasing is very important with ANY shaft with universal joints. Be it a baling machine, drive shaft on a truck, a PTO shaft....whatever....

Then we could get into the angling of those u-joints with some more physics.......

geniousCastor, Once you get the orientation right, clean a spot on both parts and put a little dab of light colored paint on it. That'll save you a lot of aggravation. BTDT.

Maybe "PTO" is not even the correct terminology.

I'm referring to the shaft that drives the belly mower. It would look like pic below if totally removed, I am just dealing with separating the splined part of the shaft:

Mark the two ends with a paint stick, then line up the marks next time you need to put it back together. That's what I done on mine which looks just like yours.

Yessir, I might try that.

Another thing I learned after getting it together this time was that the bottom PTO shaft will turn if the PTO selector (Mid/Rear/Both) is set to Rear. I didn't know that and could not get the tractor shaft to turn. More frustration. :fiery: [ <- I like this guy :laughing: ]

I wonder if unbolting the yoke might be easier yet? But if so, someone would have suggested that already...?
