So I have a problem with my PTO shaft vibrating loose from the gear box shaft.

Here is the gearbox I'm using;
1:1 32 HP RA GEARBOX BOTH KEYED

And I had to use this adapter to mate it to the PTO shaft;
1" KEYED X 1-3/8" 6T SPLINE F/M PTO ADAPTER

There is only a set screw that holds the adapter onto the gearbox shaft. But after a couple hours it vibrates loose.

Any ideas?

I have a quick release PTO adapter/extender on my Kubota:

From Amazon

Those extenders are REALLY hard on the pto bearings and seals, personally, I won't use them.

IF the set screw keeps coming loose, use blue loc-tite on it!

You should have an adapter with the Quick release.Looks like your adapter has the hole for the roll pin type retainer which would work also.If there is nothing to lock the adapter to your PTO shaft its surely not going to stay on

OOps my bad didn't realize this adapter was going on a smooth non splined shaft.I would put the adapter on your gearbox. Take the set screw out of the adapter,find a center punch that will fit in the setscrew hole without damaging the threads. Center punch the shaft and drill a countersink hole for the set screw to just set into.Coat your setscrew with locktite and reset it.Let dry overnight and your problem should be soved

I liked this idea but the set screw actual tightens down onto the woodruff key so even if I put a dimple into the key for the set screw to recess into it, I would be still worries the vibrations would cause the key and adapter to slide out together.

I'm thinking about drilling and tapping another hole in the adapter and doing what you suggested.

Thanks

Drill another set screw hole in the adapter at 90' thread hole, then as another said, dimple then make a recess for the screw in the shaft.

Otherwise, crossdrill the shaft for a retainer pin..

If you want to pin it, get a tapered reamer, and use a tapered pin. Grind the large end of the pin so it goes in a little below flush, then pien the top of the hole to keep it in.

How tight does the adapter fit on the shaft? On my Herd seeder they fit very tight (pushing by hand isn't enough). If your adapter fits loosely then that could be causing you issues. I agree with soundguy, drill and tap a second hole at 90 degrees to the first one and add a second set screw. If it's been happening for some time now and either the shaft is worn or the adapter you may want to try a new adapter to see if it's tighter.
