I'd like to hear from anybody who has found a good way to protect their tire stems against random sticks. I suffered my second flat in two years (of course, 'way back in the woods) from having a stem dismounted by something. This time, I didn't notice the flat until I'd already damaged the tire bead, so it was an expensive event.
My rims have a metal shield around the stems, but this doesn't prevent sticks or other debris from poking in there and prying/shoving the stem enough to unseat it. Would some sort of cap over the stem protector work? If so, how would I keep the cap on?
I'm ready to hear from the voice(s) of experience, since I'm getting leery of even taking my tractor back into the woods now.

Hello RD!

I just came back from PEI / vacation!

Beautiful golfs with Rodd's resort! I saw a lot of JD over there! My system seems to work out well, just enough clearance for pressure gauge. Here a pic.

Best of luck - Phil

Some weld on a short pipe thread with a pipe cap.DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE TIRE MOUNTED.

I've seen heavy equipment with what looks a piece of pipe with a pipe cap threaded on the end.

I had my property logged many years ago. The hugh skid loader had a chunk of pipe welded to the rim protecting the valve stem inside. A pipe cap was screwed on the end of the pipe. I know this because one evening they drove the loader up to my work shed to get me to air up the tires. It was kind of a pain too - the pipe was too long and the valve stem was difficult to get the air hose on and keep it on. The big knobby tires and chains on all four tires really tore up the yard too.

I use these short metal valve stems.

I've worked on flail movers (off road) for NSDOT, we've got a couple of TV-140's and what we have is a piece of 2" pipe threaded with a cap over it. As nybirdman said, do not weld on a rim with a tire mounted, if you're consider it, look up the word pyrolysis.....Mike

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. It looks like some sort of rigid (but removable!) cap over the stem shield is what I need to come up with.
